Wow, Alomar got more votes than any first time candidate who didn't get in. Certainly within spitting distance.

@sportsguy33 BTW, I thought Andre Dawson deserved to make it this year over the other 8 years. He had an underrated 2008 season. |

He got more votes this year because the voters finally heard this song:

Bonds and Clemens will never get in unless the HOF decides to allow in cheaters, which opens up the Pete Rose pandora's box. I love Edmonds. But he isn't a HOFer. His last 4-5 seasons were sub par. He simply doesn't have enough quality seasons. But we have to interupt for an important news flash. Huge news. HUGE! Wifebeater signs with the Astros. |

Have we talked about this yet
Mark McGwire is returning to baseball as the Cardinals' hitting coach. Could he also be making a cameo as a player? Manager Tony La Russa, in an interview with the Contra Costa Times, mentioned the possibility of putting McGwire on the team's active roster on Aug. 31 so he'd be eligible to play in the postseason, if the Cardinals are in the race. "If we're in contention, we'll put him on the roster. It's a nice little dream," La Russa said. "Is it likely? Probably not. But I don't think it's a zero possibility." LaRussa also said McGwire, who again failed to get elected into the Hall of Fame due to performance-enhancing drug accusations, will address the media soon. |

B DeBrun wrote:Interesting to see Salmon on that list. I'm a big fan of his, but I don't think he put up the numbers for the hall of fame. It would be cool to see at least one of the Angels outfield in the hall though (Edmonds probably has a small chance). And Salmon never played in the all star game too. |

I highly doubt Frank Thomas is a first-ballot selection, but I don't think he'll have much trouble getting in
either.

Antithesys wrote: I saw that and I thought it was just LaRussa being LaRussa. McGwire has dropped out of sight since he retired so it's a bit surprising to see him named at a hitting coach. It's a grunt work type of a job but others like Mattingly did it. I think LaRussa is doing it to help rehabilitate McGwire's tarnished legacy and try to boost his fading HOF chances. The cameo is clever. That effectively sets McGwire back 5 more years, at a point where the HOF has to address the steroids legacy, especially Bonds and Clemens. If they get in, McGwire will too. |

Also, for much of his prime, he suffered from the Scottie Pippen syndrome. He may have been one of the 10 best in his league, but he was overshadowed by the best. |

HY, I'm just trying to see it as the HOF writers would see it.
BTW, MLB network is broadcasting the 1986 NLCS, Mets v Astros the greatest NLCS ever. |
