So we are thinking of taking the kids for a week long vacation in our nation's capital. Any suggestions as to what to see, where to stay?

Stay someplace north and east of the Capitol. The hotels there are really inexpensive.

Try one of these places: http://www.smithsonian.org/
And eat here if you can: http://www.ethiopianrestaurant.com/dc/meskerem.html |

So they don't know Disney World exists, huh?
Or is it that you just want to punish them? Either way, you're on the right track. |

Do your kids like getting drunk? Georgetown has really nice sidewalks to be stumbling down at 2am. Besides that visiting DC was one of the more regrettable
choices for a weekend. Hope you enjoy looking at people looking at boring shit.

is Clyde's Chili still in Georgetown?
used to be a great place skip outa DC and visit some battlefields, Gettysburg is only a couple hours away, Antietam is closer still or you could go Virginia and see Bull Run, Frederickburg et al. Virginia also has Mt Vernon about 1/2 hr south of DC Kids should go to Arlington, just across the river, just so they know what it takes to have freedom |

Not really much to see there. Have you considered Branson instead?

I enjoyed DC after the horrible first night. I don't know how much kids would really enjoy it, depending on how old they are. But it could also be the most
inspiring thing they've done.

when is the trip and how old are the kids?
go to your rep's and senators' websites asap and get reservations for tours -- the white house, the capitol, and they probably offer others, depending on the office. you have to arrange white house tours at least a month in advance, unless you're the salahis. all the congressional offices have interns and junior staffers to walk you around, so put them to work. most of the museums are on the mall or a couple blocks off it, so it's easy to cover a few in a day. air & space is a must. national gallery of art...it all depends on the ages of the kids, i guess. museums off the mall include the newseum, the spy museum and the national building museum (great building, great gift shop). do a bus tour, just to get your bearings in the city. it's a great way to see all the monuments, too, if you want a break from all the walking. most people come in the spring for the cherry blossom festival. but it's more crowded then, and you can never be that sure of the timing for when the trees will bloom. |

You can get gay-married. THAT would be a vacation the kids would never forget.

Go to Ziegfried's on O Street S.E.

If you go during the spring you'll have to deal with busloads of students on field trips. If you go in the summer, you'll have to deal with hordes of
tourists and humidity beyond belief.

Go to the zoo. I thought it was kind of dirty when I was there, but the kids probably won't notice. Plus they have pandas.
Of course you should check out some of the Smithsonian museums. Air and Space is probably the best, but kids usually like the Natural History museum. American History is good. Skip the lesser-known ones. Skip the Halocaust Museum unless they're old enough to handle it. Definitely skip the American Indian one -- zzzz. The Spy Museum was decent. Go to the National Archives so they can see the Declaration of Independence and the Constititution. You should also plan trips to the major monuments -- Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, Vietnam, Korea, Washington Monument, etc. It won't take long, but they're major sights worth seeing once, IMO. Mount Vernon is a good break from the Smithsonian museums and memorials. Oh, and a trip to Arlington National Cemetary is worth it. You can see JFK's grave and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (and changing of the guard). I recommend doing a tour (they have drop-off trolley ones that have designated stops so you can move around at your own pace) or using the metro. If you don't want to pay the price of staying inside D.C. itself (and dealing with parking), you could always take the metro in each day. Just research the area a bit. |

Seconding what Springfever said, the end of May and the beginning of June everything is overrun by busloads of 12 - 16 year old kids. July and August the
weather is just freaking brutal ... that's why Congress gets out of town.
The Smithsonian museums (and that includes the National Zoo) are all free. Yep, Air & Space is a must and the kids will love it. Same with the zoo. Check the IMAX schedules at the museums, the kids will love that. Even though the food can be pretty good in the museum cafeterias, don't eat there unless your a millionaire. There's a huge-assed food court in the lower level of the Reagan Building that's reasonable, if you don't mind fast-food fare. The Old Post Office Bldg. also has a bunch of fast food places. There are bus tours from downtown to Mt. Vernon (Washington's home). Look into that, as well as the other tours. As others have pointed out, they're a good way to get to know the city. Also, once you get the hang of it, the Metro (subway) can be a good way to get around town. Washington.org is the official tourism site for the city, check that out. And always be on the look-out for little-known monuments, there are hundreds of them all over town and they can be fun to "discover." |

Oh, and I forgot to add, be sure to go up to one of the White House security gates, and say, "I'm here to kill the President!" Those guys are
real cool and love practical jokes.

Do the Lincoln Memorial at night -- more impressive
The tower at the old post office is a quick way to view the city without waiting at the Wash Monument National Gallery of Art for one hour with the kids Smithsonian science/nature museum US Capitol tour via congressman's office -- better tour than the general one. |
