My husband used to be one of the computer component hoarders. It was never like what you would see on the show but we wound up with like 4 laptops, 2 desktops and a ton of processors, motherboards, etc that were just pure shit. I shoved them all into a guest room closet and then put some other items that he frequently used in there, buried under the computer graveyard. After having to move all that crap to get to his stuff a few times it finally clicked with him that it was garbage. Maybe something like that can work for others. Now he thankfully realizes that he is never going to use the stuff and that it is so out of date that he wouldn't be happy with whatever he rebuilt. Having kids has helped too- sometimes I over emphasize what a safety hazard things can be just to get rid of it. His Mom is a low level hoarder- especially with the gift wrap. She has a entire garage wall full of old paper but she never reuses it- she just boxes it and then uses new when she gives gifts. I want to torch it! She also saves every old Christmas card and has since the 70's claiming she will reuse parts of them one day but she doesn't. The last time we helped her move I purged a few milk crates full of cards and she never noticed.

My Mother was a strange sort- she would constantly buy me stuffed animals and then freak out over teh amounts I had. She'd make me go through them one at a time to purge and when I'd try to get rid of one she had given me she'd tell me that I was hurting the feelings of the animal and that I was ungreatful. She wanted me to only get rid of the ones that I'd had for years and loved or the ones that others had given me. I guess it's about control. To this day she'll give my kids books that she knows they already have but write in the front cover that it's "To Baby A: Love Your Loving Grandmother" or some other shit like that. She says I can just get rid of the old one and keep hers. Seriously fucked up if you ask me. I just white it out and toss it to Goodwill.
