this question popped into my head today. in retrospect, i think he was a dirty old pervert who liked his women weak. i probably read the book 5 times in my
teens/twenties, and being "30 with pearls" seemed like yeah, an old lady, but fucking max was like 50. he didn't WANT the second mrs dewinter to
ever be 30 with pearls, or she'd catch onto his ass.

yeah, but can you imagine being however old the second mrs dewinter was (21? 22?) and dealing with that crazy old mutherfucker? she never even asked him for
