Writers Guild Nominations:
It's important to note that films like An Education, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9 were not eligible, all of which will most likely receive Oscar
nominations in their respective categories. A Single Man was also not eligible, but I'm uncertain of its strength in the screenplay race.

More guild awards have announced their nominees. I think ACE (the editing guild) was supposed to announce tomorrow but Variety leaked it. These are pretty
significant, because if you aren't nominated for an Eddie, you won't win Best Picture. At least according to history.
Inglourious Basterds took a huge hit from this, as did Precious. The Eddies have never left off a Best Picture winner since 1995. The Hurt Locker is the only film to get noticed by every single guild, and yet people are still hesitant to predict it as our winner on Oscar night. I don't know why, but the box office argument is the most retarded thing ever. With D9 and Star Trek being so successful lately I think all three Sci-Fi films stand a strong chance at making the top ten. ETA: yes, KMK, that's Jane Campion's Bright Star. I'm still hoping that maybe Abbie Cornish can get nominated a la Laura Linney/Tommy Lee Jones. It's definitely the type of performance people would put as #1 or #2 on their ballots. Still, it's wishful thinking and borewhore Helen Mirren is probably getting that last spot  .

I hope to God that Avatar is NOT up for best movie. It's so 'not' an A.A. type film. Sure..give it special effects. There are way too many
Transformer moments in that flick.

From that list that was posted some pages back, I've managed to see: Inglorious Basterds The Hurt Locker An Education The Young Victoria Avatar and I'd rate them in that order. Inglorious Basterds was the only real one that I loved... but I guess I'd be ok with THL or An Education winning. |

I saw ME AND ORSON WELLES today. The guy who played Orson was really good, but overall...yeah, it was OK. If you have a couple of dead hours to fill go for it,
otherwise wait for the DVD.

I watched AN EDUCATION last night. It was good. The ensemble cast as a whole were very good. Carey Mulligan definitely deserves her nominations. Although I
think Alfred Molina should be nominated as well.
