As far as casting goes, someone on another site suggested Peter Krause for the lead. I think he would be a good choice.

My ideal pick would be Timothy Olyphant, but he's already signed on for a new series on FX.

The networks are usually much more uptight about sex than they are about violence.

I echo the relief that NBC didn't land this show. Look what they've done to Heroes the past couple of years.

Eh, I blame the lousy writers for Heroes. Shame, such an amazing first season.

The Prisoner, is that the one with where a James Bond like character is trapped and there's some trippy ending where he is the one imprisoning himself (or something...)? If so, I def want to watch that. I remember reading about it from some Lost theory.

THE WALKING DEAD GREENLIT

The Walking Dead, based on the Image Comics series by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, has been greenlit as a pilot by AMC, Image has announced.

"The Walking Dead's road to the small screen has been a long one, but so far it's looking like the best of all worlds," creator and writer Robert Kirkman said. "Given AMC's track record with shows like Madmen and Breaking Bad, combined with Frank Darabont writing and directing, I couldn't possibly be more excited for this to come together. Having the pilot greenlit is a huge leap forward to this becoming a reality."

The Walking Dead has been published by Image Comics since 2003, with the series' 69th issue due in stores next week. According to Image, plans are for the AMC series to closely adapt the storylines presented in the monthly comics.

"Since its debut in October 2003, The Walking Dead has been nothing short of unstoppable," said Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson. "Over the last five years, sales on both the single issues and the trade paperback and hardcover collections have gone from strength to strength, so it's no surprise that The Walking Dead is now poised for success on TV. Everyone at Image is very excited to see this project come to light."

AMC last week greenlit to pilot “The Walking Dead,” writer-director Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel series. The funnybook, set in a world overrun by zombies, follows a handful of survivors in search of a safe place to live.

Darabont's credits as a writer-director include "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile" and "The Mist." AMC is the channel behind "Breaking Bad" and multiple outstanding-drama Emmy winner "Mad Men."

Patrick Sauriol at Coming Attractions has read the pilot script and says it may be as good as we were all hoping. Excerpt:

So, here is the big question: does Darabont's Walking Dead pilot have the necessary ingredients to be not just a decent horror TV series but a good drama?

The answer: Yes, it does.

Contained in Darabont's 60-page pilot script are all the elements to make the show a success. There's plenty of horror that happens in those 60 pages. The director's script covers the broad range of the zombie horror emotional spectrum, such as giving us moments of extreme gore (hey, any zombie TV show wouldn't be a zombie show if it didn't have folks being munched on!), moments of shock value (hey, you didn't think that there was a zombie hiding behind that car, did you?) and the moments that I believe are the best indicator that The Walking Dead TV series has what it takes to transcend the boundaries of being simply labelled a horror show, the psychological horror scenes. Those scenes are the hammers that you're going to remember and the ones that are going to propel this show to be viewed as something more important than just a scary show.

Another:

The Walking Dead pilot doesn't sell out its concept for the sake of finding a wider audience. This is a show set in a world where families have died and the survivors haven't had the time to cope with their losses, much less come to terms with civilization collapsing around them. Knowing the course that Kirkman's comic book takes and now after seeing how Darabont's chose to make the pilot more of a drama than a flat-out horror action show, AMC's Walking Dead has fantastic potential. The Walking Dead could even do for horror what the new Battlestar Galactica did for science fiction. Cross your fingers and hope that the show comes together as well as it did on the page.

Despite AMC's slip up with its remake of The Prisoner, we're pretty confident that it will continue to pump out quality programming to join its two hits Breaking Bad and Mad Men. And the next show to join the network's slate will be an adaptation of Robert Kirkman's graphic novel series The Walking Dead, a comic about... ZOMBIES. Today AMC ordered six episodes of the show for its first season, making me one very happy nerd.

As far as trends go, zombies are a thing I can get behind. And having read the first book of the series, I can say that The Walking Dead is more than just about a few survivors running through a mall while lumbering undead try and snack on their frontal lobes.

Though shuffling meatbags with an appetite for braaaaains will be the initial draw of The Walking Dead, the real deal with the comic is how human nature evolves (or devolves) through crisis and the need for survival trumps morality. Because of this, the series is primed for some incredibly tense moments even when zombies aren't on screen.

The lead role has yet to be cast, but a new frontrunner has come into light, according to horror site Bloody Disgusting. Jonny Lee Miller, formerly of Eli Stone and Trainspotting is in talks to play Rick Grimes, the cop who wakes from a coma to find America overrun by the living dead. Other candidates rumored for the role include Mark Pellegrino (Jacob from Lost, Lucifer from Supernatural) and Jamie Bamber (Apollo from Battlestar Galactica). If either Miller or Pellegrino gets cast, I'll be a happy camper.

Overseeing and helming the project will be Frank Darabont, the director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

Can you tell I'm excited for this?

Jonny Lee Miller and Mark Pellegrino? Sooooo much potential there.

Hmm...I'm not really crazy about those choices, mainly because I'm very visual when it comes to comic adaptations. I agree that Peter Krause would have been perfect for the role, but I love him on Parenthood.

Kinda sucks we're only getting 6 episodes for now, but I suppose it's better than nothing.

I don't think the 6 episodes is a bad thing, if all they do is adapt book one. They have some other huge problems, that they will be able to hide with six episodes that they can't with 12 namely

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought of when I heard about the show.

lol, if it's a hit, they should just shoot 3 or 4 seasons in a row to avoid a Lost Walt situation.

Or cast Peter Dinklage.

Dinklage is going to be busy for the next six or seven seasons as Tyrion Lannister on HBO's "Game of Thrones".

What's great about the story is that the mythology is so good that they can play around with dead children and still honor the story. They can also do a time stall at different plot points and age the children naturally. Obviously they are hoping Carl will grow into a decent actor (like Shane on Weeds) but if he doesn't major plot point spoilers

He gets shot quickly in book which could be an easy death, we also have the serial killer in book 3 and the massive culling in the prison so that's three cannon outs for Carl. Rick can also become surrogate type parent at multiple points in the book

This is an incredible comic book series, and should lend itself well to series TV. Despite this comic book series being about zombies, it's not 100% gore. I can't do excessive gore & violence to begin with; this comic series can be brutal and horrifying. But it focuses more on the survivors and their struggles/back stories/interactions with the zombies and other survivors. I am way excited for this show.

AMC Casts Rick Grimes In "Walking Dead"

On the heels of its first piece of casting news and word that the series had been picked up for a six-episode run, today AMC announced that it has cast actor Andrew Lincoln as lead character Rick Grimes in executive producer Frank Darabont's TV adaptation of Robert Kirkman's Image Comics zombie series "The Walking Dead."

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the British star's involvement with the series and had a quote from Kirkman, who said, "“Andrew Lincoln, wow--what an amazing find this guy is. Writing Rick Grimes month after month in the comic series, I had no idea he was an actual living breathing human being and yet here he is. I couldn't be more thrilled with how this show is coming together."

Lincoln starred in the BBC sitcom "Teachers" for three years and is perhaps best known to American audiences for romancing Keira Knightly in the Christmas romantic comedy "Love Actually." As fans of the "Walking Dead" comic know, Grimes is the series protagonist and its one promised survior as the zombie apocalypse has a knack for rolling over supporting cast pretty quickly.

With Lincoln's casting, fans can expect things to heat up for the May-filming series as Darabont and Kirkman have already been joined by more writing staff in the form of "Dexter" producer Charles "Chic" Eglee.
