What made me so made is Naomi is STAUNCHLY pro life yet decided immediately her daughter was getting an abortion.

Maya should be damn thankful she has Addison. Some other sketchy doctor may have given her the abortion straight away. Naomi's damn lucky Addison is there fore her kid too, forcing Maya to have an abortion at this stage may have had worse consequences than just a teen pregnancy in the future for their family.

I'm sure everyone knows its not real life, myself included. If Maya had an abortion whatever it doesn't effect anyone b/c its not real life, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it.

Realistically Adoption isn't an option for most. It's considered a worse option that either two by both and you have to get the Father to agree or you have to keep the kid. Those two on Teen Mom were actually a good example of how society really reacts to adoption. In some states they wouldn't have been able to give the baby up at all because the mother wouldn't sign the paper allowing it.
Regardless it still should have been brought up and it should have been the first reaction of Naomi with her being so Christian. |

This was a great episode! For all those that think your moral decisions cant change on a whim it can and it is real life. I am against capital punishment but if someone from my family was brutally murdered my first reaction would be to want them dead. In time I may have changed my mind but that would be my first reaction just like Naomi's knee jerk reaction to Mya's pregnancy!

They can change, but that often means it's not one you held strongly about in the first place. If you honestly believe that life did begin at conception, and that having an abortion was tantamount to murder, then she would actually have the opposite reaction--abortion wouldn't cross her mind until later. Like I said before--it's easy to hold to your morals when life is going well and you're not affected. It's another thing for them to crumble so easily in the face of challenges. How can anyone take her seriously when she's lecturing the other characters and doctors over doing the right thing in the future? She was already a shitty TV mom, this episode made her suck as a character too. |

Well, I loved it.
Naomi cracked, and those fissures will have repercussions. Throwing away long-held beliefs, slapping her daughter, trying to push an abortion on a confused 15 year old, and dealing with not just what is to come, but also how her "gut" made her react, as well as feeling like a hypocrite? That's a lot for her to have to handle now, along with, apparently, a baby-to-be, and a pregnant kid who is barely in high school. I have always been strongly pro-choice, but personally, felt just as strongly that I could never have an abortion. I also never wanted to have kids, decided when I was 10 and I never changed my mind. Then one day, there it was. I had to consider abortion, and it devastated me, and also shocked the hell out of me that I was actually considering it. Until that moment, I honestly thought I "knew" (for SURE) that I simply couldn't do that. Turns out...nothing was sure after all. I think that's where Naomi was at that moment, and her overwhelming fear for her daughter's immediate and eventual future drove her over the edge. I completely understood her fear/horror/confusion/embarrassment/disappointment in herself and her daughter. It felt real to me, both the writing and the acting. BTW, I miscarried within the week, which made sense because I was on the pill, the shock was getting pregnant at all. I hope they don't have the daughter miscarry. I enjoyed "Naomi's" acting last night, and there is a lot more to play out here. She's got all of the emotions to cope with, and I think I want to see what else the actress can bring to this. Will she send her pregnant daughter to school? I think her worry and pride and yes, the whole "status" thing has story here, and possibly the racial stereotypes of a pregnant black teen will play out too. I don't want story to focus on the kid (much) because that's been done to death. I think I will like watching Naomi deal though, and it got off to a great beginning. I am sure they will discuss adoption, but that doesn't really "solve" everything either. Will Maya change schools? Will there be stigma? Will any of them be able to actually give the child away once it is born? Even if they do, it will have emotional impact on all of them, and Maya still has to deal with the kids at her (presumably affluent) school.

A dear friend of mine used to be a family planning counselor. Realistically Adoption isn't an option for most. Of course it is. Just because it's an option a lot of people don't consider or don't want for varying reasons doesn't mean it's not an option. Is this the 50's? Do people seriously still ship their kids off to "live with an Aunt for a while" when they get pregnant? I do agree with Tigerjag that people's beliefs can change significantly when it's something you have to deal with personally. You can think a certain way for a long time, and then just find that you feel differently when actually faced with it yourself. |

It's only an option if the father agrees. If he decides (even if he never wanted the kid or is an abusive asshole) that he doesn't want the kid adopted then the girl is screwed, even if he decides six months later.
Unlike the other two decisions, that one doesn't involve the girl alone and it's far more complex than the other situations. |

They keep them in their regular classes as long as possible, enroll them in special child development/parenting classes during the school day, provide support for child care, and if the mom has complications (high probability in teen pregnancies & getting late pre-natal care), they provide a home tutor. |

Most schools have several visibly pregnant girls walking around at a time. Title 9 and the pressure to lower the drop out rate means that schools are generally friendly. Often girls will switch over to an alternative school for credit completion so they can get done faster or in less hours, but the more intelligent ones that get knocked up will stay in classes.

I was impressed by the episode. However, it was yet another pro-life cop-out. It seems there hasn't been an abortion on primetime since Maude. It's just a taboo subject that is discussed and is never actually performed. Abortion is always a backstory. It's okay if some character has had one provided it was in the past. Anyway, I really enjoyed Naomi's reaction to her daughter's pregnancy. However, it just seems retarded that the daughter of two MDs couldn't master birth control. I thought Addison's speech was brilliant but ultimately hollow because she didn't address life after the birth. And when Maya looked at that newborn like it was a doll I nearly wanted to slap the black off her myself. We get it babies are cute, but there's literally a shitload maintenance involved. Your life ends when you become a parent, meaning it's no longer about you. Your dreams, aspirations, goals are put on hold to raise your child, or at least they should. Luckily, for Maya, her parents are loaded and could possibly provide her with a comfortable life after she's given birth. But I would probably have Naomi's reaction if I had a teenager daughter that was stupid enough to get pregnant. I doubt I would force her to get an abortion, but you never know how you'll react in such situations until you're actually faced with them. And if my daughter decided to go through with the pregnancy she'd be figure out how she's going to raise it on her own. If you're adult enough to have sex and carry a pregnancy to full term then you're adult enough to support yourself and your child.
