Former newscaster Robert Lam dies of skin cancerFormer newscaster Robert Lam passed away Saturday after being stricken with skin cancer for more than three months.Lam, 64, passed away at 5.15am at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. Lam’s brother-in-law, Robert Lau, 55, said Lam dedicated the last ten years of his life to charitable and church works. “Not many people saw this side of Robert because they know him as a well-known newscaster and emcee. In the later years of his life, he was involved in church ministry works and helped to care for the old and infirm at an old folks home,” he said when contacted. Lam leaves behind his wife, Jane Chong Yang Chun, 58, son Mark, 23 and daughter Alexis, 22. The wake will be at the First Baptist Church in Jalan Gasing on Sunday from 8.30pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 10am before the cortege leaves for burial at the Lutheran Garden in Shah Alam. Lam had served three years from 1965 as a RMAF pilot flying the Pioneer aircraft after being commissioned from the Royal Military College’s Intake Six a year earlier. He then left for England to pursue a career in insurance management and public speaking. Lam later returned home to read prime-time news for 23 years on TV3, RTM and TV8 Metrovision. He left the media and turned to emceeing at functions before setting up the Robert Lam English Language Centre in Subang Jaya with nationwide branches. Lam, with the Kingdom Christian Fellowship, had also set up the Faith International Training School in Subang Jaya to teach Bible studies. |

Former Cleveland Playboy Playmate Found Dead from Drug Overdose
Jennifer Lyn Jackson Thompson, a former Playboy Playmate who hailed from Cleveland and made headlines in July 2007 when she was arrested for drunk driving, died of what appears to be a drug overdose early Friday morning. Police were called to the mobile home park where she lived with her husband. Cleveland's own Miss April 1989 was found dead. Police say that there is nothing suspicious about her death and that she has been abusing drugs for years. Jackson, 39, was charged with a DUI in 2007 after she was pulled over by police in Oberlin, OH. Authorities also found in her car open beer bottles, marijuana, and rolling papers. Further allegations were that she stole the cigarettes and cigars found in her vehicle. She was sentenced to 180 days in jail. |

I loved Jean Simmons. I re-watched Elmer Gantry just a couple of weeks ago. I remember when she did those great dramatic voiceovers on A&E's series about the Old Testament, reading passages from the Bible. She had a great speaking voice.

Oleg Velyky dies of cancer at 32 German handball officials say that Germany and former Ukraine international Oleg Velyky has died of cancer. He was 32. Velyky's club, HSV Hamburg, says Saturday that he died overnight in his native Ukraine. Velyky made 59 international appearances for Ukraine before taking German citizenship. He played 38 times for Germany, winning the world championship in 2007. He was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2003. He was believed to have recovered, but complications returned last September. Velyky is survived by his wife and six-year-old son. Funeral arrangements were not immediately available. |

James Mitchell, who played patriarch Palmer Cortlandt on "All My
Children" for 31 years, passed away Friday, Jan. 22 in Los Angeles of
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Mitchell last appeared on "All
My Children" on Jan. 5 for its 40th anniversary episode.
Mitchell got his start on Broadway due to his dancing talent. He performed in, among others, "Brigadoon," "Carousel," "Paint Your Wagon," "Funny Girl" and "The King and I." He was also in the film version of "Oklahoma." Mitchell took to teaching before he got his start on television, teaching movement for actors at Yale University and Drake University, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in fine arts. He is survived by his long-time partner Albert Wolsky. |

Former Phila. News Anchor Ken Matz Dies of Cancer Former Philadelphia news anchor and KYW staff member Ken Matz has died following a battling with cancer. Ken began his broadcasting career at WRAW in Reading and then in Harrisburg before moving on to WIBG where he gained recognition from 1969 to 1976 winning several AP awards. After leaving WIBG, he joined the KYW Newsradio line-up as an anchor for several years. When Larry Kane left channel 10 in 1995, Ken Matz took over an anchor chair and co-anchored with Jane Robelot for a brief time, and when Jane Robelot moved on to the morning show, Ken became sole anchor at channel ten until 1998. After that he left for Florida and later retired in Florida. Ken died Saturday after battling cancer
