Am I the only one who sees censorship like this as a bad thing? Sometimes it feels like I am.

Maybe censorship wasn't the word I wanted, but people getting in trouble for voicing opinions can't be good.

Lila Fowler wrote:I realize we're all supposed to be clever but I came from that area and the dairy farmers are in desperate straits. He killed the ones who needed milking because there was no one after he killed himself who could milk them--and if they aren't milked in 12 hours they are in a lot of pain and if they aren't milked in 18 hours there are legal issues. from the note on the door it was clear he didn't know how long it would be before he was found. And he was trying to save his wife from the pain of finding him--and of trying to take care of the herd she already wasn't able to help with. If he was milking a herd of 51 by himself morning and night seven days a week... my grandfather drove himself to an early death trying to keep up with a dairy farm. |

From the interview with the superintendent:
NewsChannel 9’s Keith Kobland: OH NOEZ! God forbid any students have any semblance of a life or opinions that don't revolve around that hellhole they're jailed in 6-8 hours a day. Keith Kobland: Way to NOT answer the question about free speech. Also, really, if that many students have that serious of a problem with a teacher, maybe they should examine the effectiveness of the instructor to begin with instead of just punishing kids for displaying independent thought.

The page, which has now been removed, criticized a teacher at the school to the point where the superintendent said the comments were libelous.

I am generally for that too, but I'm also generally for sticking it to the shitty education system. I have a conundrum here.

Where do we draw the line at defining "libel" though? Really, it's just a bunch of kids posting on facebook; how much "serious harm" could they justifiably do to her reputation? They probably just called her a fat bitch.

Oh and I'm not for defending facebook fucks; I just hate the shitty education system much, much more than I could ever hate facebook fucks.

punishing kids for displaying independent thought. How is 30 kids getting together to agree they hate a teacher "independent thought"? |

How is 30 kids getting together to agree they hate a teacher "independent thought"? It's at least independent from what they're TOLD to think, which looks good to me. Good question. You just inadvertently swayed me because I realized you'd need lawyers to make that determination, and I loathe making lawyers wealthier more than I loathe facebook fucks or school system fucks. See? We're all on the same team.

I am all for teenagers having the freedom to say what they have to say. I was a hippy (in the *cough* *cough* some time before the turn of the seventies) But with the recent events of school shootings, not to mention all the students who have brought weapons to school and miraculously not managed to injure someone. . . well I think the school districts are leaning towards caution. I am not saying that is right but much more has come from less than a warning on a blog or facebook or whatever it is. I think some of these kids are truly troubled. Most I will admit are just acting out as kids will do but it only takes the one who takes it to another level to cause disaster.
