awww I wasn't being clever. It was just one of the more bizarre things I've heard lately. I wonder what the financial paperwork will yield when the widow gets it all sorted out???

Unless the group either directly said that they wanted to harm the teacher or implied it, the school had no right to get involved.

If Facebook was easily accessible as it is now when I was in high school, my entire school would have been suspended for hating on a substitute teacher that literally no one liked and everyone made fun of. Not even the teachers liked him, they would ask us if he subbed for them and apologized that we were stuck with him for a day.

Sometimes, it's fun to find the various "hate" facebook groups made by high schoolers and middle schoolers just to see their mindset. Kids at that age are willing to say some pretty damn nasty stuff...my guess is they were claiming she had STDs.

Also, I actually agree; the kids shouldn't get detention because it's their freedom of speech. Instead, the teacher should sue the kids for $50,000 for libel and emotional trauma. That'll teach them a much better lesson than detention.

Why is it okay to call a teacher a fucking asshole when you are home but not at school? Don't the kids have free speech at school too?

If someone working for me calls me an asshole on the internet I'd fire him. Free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences stemming from what you say.

My son's math teacher had a similar hate group devoted to her on facebook. She joined, much hilarity ensued. That's the way to handle this sort of thing. She's a great teacher, tough but one who actually wants her kids to learn. Watching the little shits backtrack and try to save face was worth way more than detention. Free speech preserved all around.

this is my area and its all that has been talked about for the past few days. its fucking annoying. Anyways, apparently the group was REALLY REALLY talking nasty about this teacher, some of it highly sexual and violent. It was disrupting school cause its all these stupid kids could talk about. fuck these stupid kids, its disrupting school, they went waay too fucking far and I say suspend the fuck outta 'em. and that stupid man who all up in arms about the school disciplining his daughter is a fucking NUT CASE.

I'm on the school's side on this one. How is this different than passing around notes or putting up signs slamming the teacher? It affects the school. I'm tired of this attitude of "Oh, it's the internet! It's so cool! You don't understand -- it's so easy to do anything I want, so it must be okay!" Fuck these little brats.

My only beef is that it sounds like all the kids got the same punishment. The ones who actually made the defamatory statements should be more severely punished; kids who just signed on as "fans" but didn't say anything shouldn't be lumped in with the people doing the actual trash-talking.

And the teacher should sue the kids/parents who said the really nasty stuff. Then maybe mommy and daddy would pay attention to what Precious is doing on the computer at night.

Ummm... they're fucking KIDS. They don't get to cry censorship when an adult is punishing them for being dumbshits. This is how they learn the difference between right and wrong - so when they do become adults, we don't need a bunch of ridiculous laws on the books pointing out how to behave like a fucking normal person.

The school had no right to overstep their boundary's of free speech. This is no different than if a bunch of kids went out bowling after school and then started talking shit about their teacher.

The only problem is that if the teacher was threatened in any way or form via the facebook comments, then he would likely be able to take the matter in his own hands..

The school would have nothing to do with it whatsoever..

free speech does not protect statements where one could be held liable. this FB page began be disruptive in class because its all these stupid kids could focus on. how anybody can think that the school shouldn't do anything cause its infringing on these twerps free speech is ludicrous.

besides that since when did free speech mean KIDS could say anything they want IN SCHOOL?
