Justine Henin overcomes Serena Williams to win fifth Australian Open

• Henin smashes down 12 aces during 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win
• Belgian now tied with Billie Jean King on 12 grand slam titles

Henin had played just one event in the build-up to arriving at Melbourne Park but went into the match with strong hopes of winning her eighth grand slam title. But Williams, despite heavy strapping on her right thigh, began the stronger, breaking in the fourth game on her way to a 4-1 lead. The unseeded Henin broke back for 4-3 but a backhand that hit the top of the net and landed just wide to give Williams the first set.

But after trading breaks early in the second set, Henin hit form, ripping winner after winner as she stormed through the rest of the set to level the match and when she held in the opening game of the third set and won the first point of the next game, she had won 15 straight points.

Williams had two chances to take a 2-0 lead in the decider but Henin held firm and as William's form dipped slightly, she took advantage, breaking to lead 3-2 and then again two games later, before serving out for victory and collapsing onto her back in delight.
