For Cordelia fans, again it's gossip to the rescue (take with the usual grain of salt) - supposedly Charisma very briefly had a minor drinking problem; apparently her marriage at the time wasn't going well. From what I've heard from friends in the biz, this is sort of Whedon's thing - his writing matches exactly whatever his emotional state is. If he likes you, or wants you to like him, the characterization will be incredible. If he's pissed at you, suddenly your character had problems. If he hates you, your character is going to be involved in something gross and involving lots of prosthetics and goo. Apparently he doesn't fire; he just fucks with people.

From September. It makes sense of a lot of things too: Joss turning Spike into a focal point in the show despite it messing up storylines & character believability all cause he liked JM, his propelling Willow to front and center cause of his relationship with AH (which probably led to the so-called fued between her and SMG) as well as his telling NB Xander's storyline was over by S4 but kept him on because he liked him. & apperantly CC told Joss she'd come back to do Your Welcome only if she didn't get kiilled off..lo and behold

If that Joss theory is correct, I wonder what Nicholas Brendan did to piss him off. I remember Joss saying early on that Xander was a representation of himself. I thought that in the last season, though, Xander was horribly underutilized.

i know! and xander had so much potential to be so much more than he was. he was pretty much used as comic relief with anya the last 2 seasons I think its even weirder that Joss straight up told Nicholas that his storyline was pretty much over He said the character had "run its course" which is what he would tell Charisma later on in Angel.

Run its course?? You guys are the writers, create a course for them!

I think what happened is Spike/Riley combo really hurt Xander storyline wise. He didn't need to be Buffy's "protector" anymore nor was he going to be her #2 in terms of going with her on missions.

ETA: I too think S7 was probably Xander's worst year for sure. Once NB & SMG shot down the Xander/Buffy pairing, I think Joss punished even more by almost killing him off (only to have him lose an eye). Not to mention he had to take off shirt when it was clear he was going through weight issues.

yeah it was down to him or Willow as being "the gay one." Which completely invalidates Willow's lesbianism if you think about it

I think they chose Willow cause it would be more "appealing" to the general audience seeing two females "making magic" than Xander's exploits.
