1408 was FAIL. I loath all these movies where it's all about hallucinations and just random weird stuff appearing. It has to be somewhat believable to be scary.

I don't remember much about 1408, but I don't think I hated it

I haven't seen it yet, it's way far down on my Netflix. I remember thinking the story was creepy, but it's been a long time since I read it.
Anyone plan on seeing The Crazies?

Just watched The Unborn for the first time just a few hours ago and compared to other American remake of Japanese pissed off ghost movies, it is the WORST.
ZOMG!!! The story is complete and utter trash,, the beginning made it seem like I missed 25 minutes of it. There were just SO MANY plot holes. More than usual. I don't get it. Well, at least is had some nice eye candy in Cam Gigandet. He's a precious stone. |

I watched a Korean film called Phone last week. I liked it. Had a good little actress in it who played a ghost-possessed girl.

There was nothing remotely scary about The Strangers for me. I wish I saw this epic movie you guys did, because the one I saw was forgettable and cliched, with an unbelievably stretched "plot" thinner than paper.

Someone breaking into your house to kill you isn't scary to you?
Okay. Did you found Funny Games to be a family comedy. |

I don't think anyone said it was an epic movie.
Has anyone read Shutter Island? I thought the ads for the movie looked creepy, and then when I was shopping the other day the book was on sale for $5. Now, I'm not super far into it yet, but it doesn't seem a whole lot like the movie looks like from the ads so far.

agree. i think that's why The Strangers freaked me the fuck out so bad. it's not inconceivable to think that could happen. This is what I've been saying for ages. It's why I found The Starngers and Paranormal Activity really creepy because they are eerily realistic compared to other slashers and ghost movies, respectively. I don't even believe in ghosts, but having the lights and TV flick on by themselves and hearings thuds against the walls is a lot more easy to imagine than all of those OTT Hollywood ghost movies where people get terrorized by CGI effects and stuff appearing everywhere. ETA: Yeah, I think there's like 3 of us that enjoyed The Strangers. I don't mind people not liking it, but I seriously want to cut a bitch when people say they hate it because of the ending. Clearly those people prefer the I Know what you did last summers and all those clones where the killer is always revealed, explains his motives, gets killed and everything ends with sunshines and rainbows for the protagonists. I'm glad someone had the balls to go back to the unsatisfying, disturbing endings of classic 70's/80's horror even though they knew it would piss off the new generation of viewers who only enjoy torture porn and spoon-fed thrillers.

Yeah, the trailer makes a lot of sense once you finish the book. My opinion of the book, though, is very ... mixed.

No one here, but I've heard more than a few times from other places that it was one of the best horror films of the 2000s. To each their own I guess, but I found it to be a very boring movie. :\ Then again, I will almost always pick a campy gorefest over a thriller any day. |

I tend to love movies that are set in places like the arctic, deep in the woods , trapped in an isolated place or outer space. They can get as freaky as they like, and I enjoy it because I know it wouldn't happen to me. It is the guy creeping around your house movies that I watch with my eyes half closed and sometimes I have to turn off because I know they will stay with me.

I agree that the movies with someone invading your house and whatnot all have a genuinely terrifying premise. And sometimes, the execution is pretty brilliant, too. I thought the German version of Funny Games was one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen.
The problem lies in the fact that the victims always react in ways that, to me at least, play fast and loose with the concept of common sense. That part in The Strangers where some weirdo girl knocked on the door at midnight or whatever and then a few minutes later the husband is cruising into town for a drink fucking defies belief. |
