How come on the census one of the race options is black/AfAmer/Negro. Aren't those all the same thing?

TheCatcherInTheRye wrote:Well, you can be Black without being African-American. However, I think the bigger reason is to meet the individual preferences for respondents. Some people who are African-Americans prefer Black and vice versa. If you only use one term, some people might not check the box. |

I looked it up and here is what I found... I prefer of course quadroon, octaroon and negress ... it sounds vaguely holiday cocktail-ish
ensus Bureau spokesman Jack Martin said the use of "Negro" was intended as a term of inclusion. "Many older African-Americans identified themselves that way, and many still do," he said. "Those who identify themselves as Negroes need to be included." The form was also approved by Congress more than a year ago, and the word has appeared on past forms. The use of Negro began disappearing elsewhere with the civil rights movement of the 1960s, as black or African-American became the preferred terms. |

Do a Google search for "census long form". The normal census is 10 questions. The long form that was sent out to random people at the last census was like 40 pages. I remember my aunt getting it and she was bitching about how involved it was.
Here I found this info about it. Why are There Two Forms? The remainder, one of six households, will receive the "long form" which asks about 34 subjects: those mentioned previously and education, ancestry, employment, disability, and home heating fuel. This form takes about 38 minutes to complete. The short form is also referred to as the 100 percent count, as everyone answers the seven subjects found on both the "short form" and "long form." The "long form" is referred to as sample data.

I got the "long" form at the last census. It asked about my income, the number of rooms in my home. the number of bathrooms etc. I was wondering why the hell they asked them. My income could be gotten from my tax returns, and property taxes would have answered all of the other questions. If I get the long form again I will tell them Al Gore invented the internet since the last census look it up yourself.

GlamsSlam wrote:Also in the 70s other blacks that emigrated to the USA from the islands or Europe didn't want that African American tag either. I worked with some and live in a community of another group so I had to hear a lot about how they were NOT African Americans and blah, blah, blah. I realize it struck a nerve with them but it seemed I couldn't escape that hew and cry about wanting their own category same as all the folks who were biracial. I can't recall the last time I filled out a census. Hmm, maybe hubby did it (he belonged to one of those "angry" groups, so I wonder now what he might have put down!). |

But why can't they just say "black"? Do we really need so many options?

There will be internment camps for conservatives who refuse to fill out their census though right? Don't take that away from me. I am already sad that death panels haven't shown up yet.

Some of the info they request is a bit silly. WHY do they need to know how much money I make? made? spend on utilitiy bills? Oh and all of the relevant questions data will not be processed locally, its all federal BS. So my commute to work, and how many cars I have, and the number of people living here questions ... blah blah blah I hated filling it out and they sent me a second package with a heavier tone.

They should really fuck with the conservatives and ask shit like "did you NOT vote for Obama?" and "have you ever been to a TEA Party?"
Teenanday would have a heart attack and we'd all win |

So yesterday I get a letter in the mail from the census telling me that next week I'm getting a census form "in the mail". How much do you want to bet that a couple weeks after I get the census form in the mail I'll get another letter in the mail asking me if I got the form in the mail.
