He graduated from Brooks School in North Andover, MA in 1971; he graduated from Princeton University in 1976 and then moved to Hollywood. On December 22, 1983, Stevenson married actress Kirstie Alley. Alley experienced a miscarriage and later a stillbirth, who was named Tawny Kitaen. After this they adopted two children, William True (born September 28, 1992) and Lillie Price (born June 15, 1994). Memorably, when Alley won an Emmy Award in 1991, she thanked Stevenson in her acceptance speech for giving her "the big one". The two divorced in 1997. According to media reports, Stevenson walked away from the marriage with a US$6,000,000 settlement, after asking for $75,000 per month in alimony. The couple share joint custody of their two children.
