Fave Thatcher anecdote:
ON JULY 4th 1990 much of England woke up looking forward to the World Cup semi-final that evening, between England and West Germany. The mood of the government, however, was pessimistic. One member of the Thatcher cabinet recalls a colleague giving a glum rundown of the problems afflicting the Tory government, then adding: "And just to cap it all, we're about to lose to Germany at our national game." Margaret Thatcher's response was swift: "Well, we've beaten them at their national game twice this century." |

Her positions on Ireland and Europe come to mind
eta: or rather, those were her two biggest regrets, even though she basically did the right thing |

Her big "fuck you" to the whiny assed Irish hunger strikers in 1981 is my favorite Margaret Thatcher story. Like 10 or so of them died, I think. Good for her. |

Thatcher was the best prime minster since Churchill. She actually stood up to the unions who were running our country.

I love that she's a woman and successful in spite of it! Can you imagine how awesome her weekly teas with the Queen were?
"Men, eh?" "Indeed." |

Newspaper Says Queen Is Upset by ThatcherLONDON, July 19 Queen Elizabeth II of Britain is dismayed by many of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policies, and royal advisers have taken the unusual step of briefing a newspaper about the monarch's political views, The Sunday Times said today. The newspaper said the Queen's concern about Mrs. Thatcher's policies went well beyond the disagreements within the Commonwealth over imposing sanctions against South Africa. The Queen has been described in recent press reports as worried that Mrs. Thatcher's firm opposition to sanctions threatened to break up the 49-nation Commonwealth. The Queen reportedly also believes that Mrs. Thatcher's Conservative Party Government lacks compassion and should be more caring toward less privileged members of society, The Sunday Times said. A Buckingham Palace spokesman, Michael Shea, responded to the newspaper's story with a statement denying that the Queen and Mrs. Thatcher were in conflict. Mrs. Thatcher's office, asked tonight about the story, said it never responds to inquiries about the Prime Minister's relations with the monarch. |

How can papers call the Queen a "monarch", still? It besmirches the definition of the word, nay?
