Rick Santorum is the uber-conservative former Republican Senator from Pennsylvania. In the end, Santorum's money advantage in the most expensive Senate race in Pennsylvania history, Santorum raised $25 million to Casey's $15 million, wasn't enough to outweigh popular anger over the War in Iraq.

Residency

Five Santorum children have been home-schooled at their house in Leesburg, Va., through the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, an education paid for by the Penn Hills district at a cost of $38,000 a year, until it became apparent recently that they don't live in Penn Hills.

The two-bedroom house at 111 Stephens Lane in Verona, PA that the Santorum children called home for education purposes and that gives Mr. and Mrs. Santorum the right to vote in Pennsylvania lacks an occupancy permit. And the property tax break from the homestead exemption claimed by the Santorums on the Penn Hills house is allowed under law only if the dwelling is their "permanent home."

When pressed by the School District to prove recidescy, the senator's office issued a statement on Wed Nov. 17, 2004 saying he and his wife, Karen, are withdrawing their children from the cyber school.

Sen. Santorum and his wife claim to pay taxes on the house at 111 Stephens Lane in Penn Hills, although this article suggests that Santorum is habitually delinquent in paying his local property and, ironically, school district taxes. Apparently, the Senator claims never to have received mail notifying him of the taxes or the delinquency, an excuse he also used when the same paper cited his failure to respond to a summons for jury duty in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. The Santorums also use the address for voter registration, but so do two other people, Bart and Alyssa DeLuca, both 25, according to Allegheny County records and are Sen. Santorum's niece and nephew. When a PA Post-Gazette reporter visited the house on Friday Nov. 12, 2004, a young man came to the door and declined to comment. He wasn't Rick Santorum. Apparently, Sen. Santorum, his wife, their six children and the unknown adult male all "live" in a 2 bedroom house.

Santorum supports capping lawsuits for pain & suffering at $250,000. Yet his wife sued her chiropracter for pain & suffering in the amount of $500,000 (winning $350,000).

Santorum wants to bar the taxpayer-funded National Weather Service from providing its data for free on the web, ostensibly because he feels that government-funded entitites shouldn't compete with private business. But he voted against relieving the requirement for the Department of Defense to buy goods and services from Federal Prison Industries (FPI). So, it is okay for the government to obstruct competition when it involves prison labor; but not okay to give taxpayers what they already paid for, because it might reduce the potential profits of a private enterprise? (Not to mention that there are plenty of small business entrepreneurial uses for NWS data).


Legislative Paybacks
Santorum introduced a bill to stop the National Weather Service (NOAA) from providing data for free over the internet. Jeb Bush in the Closet
On October 6, 2006, Jeb hid in a supply closet in order to avoid antiwar protesters during a campaign trip on behalf of Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. The protesters were from POG, the Uprise Counter Recruitment Tour, and Iraq Vets, who had joined together to shut down the the local blood for oil military recruitment station. Chancing upon Jeb and a campaign aide and security hire they seized the opportunity to communicate with a member of the Ruling Class. Several members of the United Steel Workers of America joined the impromptu communication effort. Jeb fled with his aide and security hire a blok down the street and down an escalator and into a utility closet.
