How the heck are we getting out of that place anyway (Iraq/Afghani)???
I know a chick who is going to Afghanistan this week....they gave her like 1.5 months notice.
Geeeze....they give you more time than that when they EVICT shitty renters.

Great movie, four out of five stars from me (on a Netflix scale).
The movie is essentially a series of setups where bombs need to be dactivated, with 5-10 minutes between each for character and plot development. Your usual character stereotypes from standard war movies are here -- rogue daredevil, scaredycat newbie -- but given a greater depth due to outstanding writing. Events are not dumbed down for the viewer. The core mystery and resolution involving an Iraqi boy play out very subtlety. Randomness plays a part of the film as it would in a real wartime situation. I'm not sure what I felt about the last five minutes -- whether it was cheap and lazy, or whether the director was making a statement about war films in general. Big stars go in and out of this movie almost on the periphery. Its really about the core three characters who are played by relative unknowns -- if you consider Jeremy Renner an unknown actor (he's been starring in things for years, like Jesse James and 28 Weeks Later). |

Chaos is the main aspect of war....you never quite know what's going on.
I think the last 5 minutes is fine.....some guys don't deal well back in civilization once they live under stress like that every day. |

Chaos is indeed the main aspect of war: a riderless horse, the freckles on the boy you're about to kill, a game of tag turned lethal |

I thought they left out too much of the main character's story. Why'd he become such an adrenaline junkie? What was missing that he would
purposefully leave his wife and kid to go risk his life defusing bombs (and do it so haphazardly)?
Missed opportunity for a really introspective film, IMO. Three stars out of five. |

I thought they left out too much of the main character's story. Why'd Frodo volunteer to take the ring to Mt Doom? What was missing that he would
purposefully leave his shire and those houses with round doors to go risk his life taking the ring to Mt Doom (and do it so haphazardly)?
Missed opportunity for a really introspective film, IMO. Three stars out of five. |

Finally got the chance to see this last night and I have to say I was not that impressed.
The movie was good but not great. This has been done many times before. I never got that "wow" feeling from it. It depicted the sad grim reality of war but again we have seen this all before. I do not think this should win "Best Picture" or "Best Director". I certainly don't think the lead actor should have been nominated. Maybe all this buzz is because it is a war movie directed by a woman. Or maybe I'm just dead inside. |

From The Hurt Locker's IMDB Message Board
Hello everyone, this is my first post. And since English isn't my mother language, sorry for my bad English. After I watched "The Hurt Locker" last night, all I thought about is... "How can this film nominated so many awards in the Academy? "Best Motion Picture of the Year", are you kidding me? This even is not a good movie!" I agree that this is a tensional, thrill, seems "realistic" movie, but it's barely enjoyable or deep. First, I think this much like a "documentary" rather than a "movie". However, this kind of concept is not new, I think "District 9" did much better than this. Not to mention some scenes are ridiculous and laughable, I don't think real sitution will go on like these. Second, ya, it is tensional, but I don't think it is the best. Inglourious Basterds" also done much better than this. And, war is tensional, right? This is not much surpise! We all know that war is going on like this! Last, I don't think this movie has much deep. War is brutal, damaged and inevitably affect solders' mental and emotional states. Who don't know this? Come on, no one may think war is great, war is wonderful before watching this movie, right? I think we know enough from our daily life, like from news, books, internet, etcetc. Thus, I don't think this film let me think much, bring us to think. However, on the other hand, I think the acting are good, the actor are real great, their acting are really believeable and really make me think they are soldiers. |

It's a movie that takes place in a war zone, but I would hesitate to call it a "war movie" because the war is just a background for the characters.
