There are a lot of folks who were in the process of or who did adopt from Haiti well before this, dottstar. Right now it would not be a good idea, however. Kids are really vulnerable to child trafficking in these situations, and Haitian kids were already being sold into slavery before the earthquake.

A friend of a friend was in the Haitian adoption process for over 2 years and dealt with a shit-ton of red tape. Then, Earthquake...boom. They had a kid 8 days later. They're just giving them away now.
Same friend just left today to go do some kind of clean water Jesus trip in Port Au Prince. Good for him and all, but I'm really sick of hearing about it. I'm not a total asshole, I gave money to the SPCA the same night as the Haiti Celebathon. |

Not the surrogate parents trying to get the children.

Wouldn't it be easier to just smuggle them out in Octo-Mom?

This is complicated:
On one hand you have Haitian parents who apparently gave up their kids when promised a better life for them. Or at least some of them are saying that. What a horrible decision for them to make but somewhat understandable. But on the other hand the better life was an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Perhaps they will teach the boys to play shortstop and tell the scouts they are 5 years younger? WHERE IS SAMMY SOSA to help in this time of need? I do notice the association of Southern Baptists ("blanc" division anyway) are washing themselves of this. Not a surprise - unless maybe the kids were UK expats from Bermuda and are monochromatic enough. Pat Robertson must be spinning in his grave. These people - the defendents as you will - I truly mean meant well and have gotten themselves caught up in a combination of "God told me it was ok", local lack of government and confusion. They certainly werent selling these kids to the highest bidder. But appear to be over-zealous. Wonder what Nancy Grace thinks? Oops never mind - this isn't newsworthy enough |

when cnn tried today to interview the group leader, laura silsby, about whether she knew the dominican official who said he told her that they did not have permission to take the children out of the country and that he told her they will be accused of child trafficking, "The group simply starting singing hymns to me. They sang 'Amazing Grace,' and broke out in prayers as well, to try to drown out any further questions."
the group has zero experience with running orphanages, and isn't registered as a nonprofit, and isn't registered as an international adoption agency. and this laura silsby who put all this together runs a business, personalshopper.com, that evidently is having financial problems. they so were going to sell those babies. just put them up right on her website. sell a couple pretty little black babies with french accents and you'll be out of debt. |

Last name of Coq? Fail organization. Hopefully they get jailed in one of those horrible Hatian jails. |

I feel bad for them as they probably could have given these children a much better life. Of course, I still think they are dumbasses. But Haiti better not be too tough on them in light of all the $$ they have been receiving from the U.S.. I don't care about the circumstances.

The whole story is this:
they were actually American Christian organ-procurers. |

If they were so eager to help Haitians, why didn't they smuggle some FOOD INTO the country instead of trying to take kids out?
Oh yeah, then they wouldn't be able to get money from the sale of the children. Duh. |

Ok, I have no sympathy for these people. The kids had parents. It's not like they were smuggling real orphans out.

I wouldn't have any sympathy for them if the kids were actually orphans.
