To them was just a nature expedition with a few games.
Greg and Colleen didn't even try to win, in fact the seemed sabotage any notion of trying to win.

I always wonder why Hatch is considered so brilliant when the other team wasn't even playing a competition.

No, it wouldn't have. America hated Buis and could never get over the weird sister/incest joke. This is fact. Hatch was the best possible winner. -SJ™ |

This season will never be topped. People who've only started watching Survivor recently just can't understand how huge Season 1 was. It shouldn't even be compared to later seasons. |

looking back, Greg Buis' bizarre exploits after the game would have made his win more Epic than Hatch. (I believe he gave away all his worldly possessions and traveled to the Andes)
If he took the same course after a win and just gave all the prize money away to charity (which would have immediately changed America's opinion of him) and then moved down to south america to never be seen again, that would be more intriguing than the "evil" hatch win + jail time for tax evasion. The story of Greg Buis would be legend. Greg + Colleen = best Survivor couple/friendship of all time (yep, better than Romber)

AbsurdSchism wrote:Wrong. Absolutely wrong. Absurdly wrong, if you will. A winner in the first season that nobody could empathize with would have been death for the show. Hatch was by no means a favorite, that was Rudy, but people could understand him even while he was running around naked during S1. Just because you rewatched and thought of a cute, weird, alternate ending doesn't mean it would really, actually have been "epic". -SJ™ |

Just think if Gretchen ended up winning.
::shudder:: If the winner would have been the best camper in all season we would have gotten winners like Debb, Frank, Hunter, Helen, Matthew, Lil, ect. |

SuperJude wrote: I was pretty young when the original show aired (first season I religiously watched was Outback) so I'll believe what you're telling me about Greg's popularity during the summer of 2000 (I was too wrapped up in the Mets' last great season). I don't understand why America did not love this bright kid who wanted to play an honest game and was the best friend of America's sweetheart. That incest comment was obviously tongue in cheek; bottom line is that Greg was damn entertaining, an original and better version of Shane Powers. |

^ The Yanks were not a great team in 2000, they only won 87 games (fewest of any playoff team that year) and finished the season 3-18. Then they almost got knocked off by the upstart A's in the first round and barely beat a Seattle Mariner team with a brutal pitching staff. Mets should have won, they were the more talented team that season. Damn you Armando Benitez, I will hate your guts forever.

I caught the show midway, which is typical since I rarely get any ground floor action, but many things stand out including Gervase's passionate reaction to Sue's speech. I got Borneo on DVD but it's just not the same as catching it first hand + commercials and weekly anticipation for Thursdays. The show gets better and better as time wears on. Everyone was classic, from Jenna's video, to Greg trying to get jiggy with Hatch, the rats, snakes and grub, Sean's Alphabets, grumpy BB, Kelly losing to Gervase, Stacey's fat thighs, Rich sitting in the tree while everyone worked, Sonja as the first bootee. So many golden moments.

I liked Buis as well. . .but the common consensus is probably right. With Hatch you had/have someone that most people have a visceral reaction to. Most people didn't get Buis or if they did his individuality rubbed them the wrong way (see above post). Regardless, w/o Hatch we're probably not having this conversation. Even if Kelly won I think most people would have said. . .NEXT because she wasn't one thing or another definitively

from what I've read most of the 60s hippies were eccentric, rich white kids who rebelled. Are they supposed to apologize for their good fortune? |
