They should be grateful that there's at least someone out there to represent them that isn't Marlee Matlin. Just because you've taken a few ASL classes doesn't give you the authority (and certainly not the credibility) to speak on behalf of the deaf community about and serve as their arbiter of that which is good or bad for them. What a reckless and ignorant thing to say.
