At least with season 8 I can understand why a lot of people liked it a lot, but season 9 was just a total dud for me. I would put this season up there with season 7.

Nobody is godawful-- even Jacob surprises me at times-- but nobody overwhelms me with their talent either. Even with Pia, I felt like something was missing. Last year was 'meh' too, but at least there was one person who was amazing (Crystal) and one or two others who'd give good performances (Siobhan and Casey come to mind). I'd say the only 'outstanding' performance so far in AI10 is Haley's "Rolling in the Deep." That's really sad.

Tho I'm pretty sure the main reason for this is because my now favorite contestant of all time keeps surviving when every week I'm convinced she's doomed. Haley <3 I'll probably lose interest when she's booted.

Posts: 940 (04/24/11 12:14 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	As bad as season 9 was, there were stand-out performances (mostly Crystal, though Siobhan had a couple). I can't think of any performance this season that has really impressed me, except for Casey and Haley's duet.

James-Another thing coming James-The Uprising Casey-Nature Boy Haley-Rolling in the deep Jacob-Bridge over troubled water(though I am sad he didn't do the "if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind" line. My personal favorite part of that song. Pia-I'll stand by you Naima-Umbrella(more for the performance aspect than the vocals) Again, this is all subjective, but I would gladly take a season with higher talent and good performances than a season with only a couple good singers who give standout performances, and most of the time it's because they look so good in comparison to the mediocre talent surrounding them.

Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Except for one or two performances here and there (Umbrella and the Jason/Kelly live Don't You Wanna Stay come to mind), this season has been as bland as unsweetened oatmeal. The only 'topping' has been the judges telling us every week that the oatmeal is delicious! nutritious! and children are starving in whatever! foreign! country! they! don't! have! oatmeal!

Overall, I think the singers are good, but there's just nothing standing out to me. It doesn't help when my favorite (Pia) goes early, but even then, it's not as if I was enthralled with a lot of the performances. I still DVR the show, but rarely sit through an entire performance. The judges and their inability to say anything negative certainly doesn't help. I'd even rank Kara and Paula's judging abilities over Steven's.

I understand that point of view, but I'll say that I'd much rather have a few excellent performances. I'd rather waste my time viewing a show that in ten years, I'll say "OOH- I remember this. It was awesome!" than one which in ten years I'll have no recollection of. Perfect example-- AI9. I'd say that Lee was much better on the whole than Casey, but I regularly listen to Casey's "Don't" and "Jealous Guy", which were excellent IMO, while I have to strain to think of something Lee sang on the show. Even among good contestants, I think back much more fondly on the ones who had superstar performances-- Melinda's AI performances (My Funny Valentine, Have a Nice Day, Nutbush City, for example) are an iPod staple for me. Jordin's, although she was very talented and gave some excellent ones, are not.
