In a way it's too bad US reality shows seem beholden to the $1mil benchmark. As a viewer, I don't mind the lower stakes or low budget challenges. The basket challenge in ep1 was one of the most interesting all season, and was virtually free to produce. Speaking of that challenge, though, what was the point of awarding Pepijn an exemption with the option of a non-elimination round? I didn't understand why he accepted that (other than the fact that they're all celebs and trying to save face as well as win). I expected that choice would have come with money added to the pot, but nope. In what season did the Jokers get introduced? Those were great, perfect way to give an advantage without a full exemption. Okay... onto the Patrick/Art bromance. At times I suspected Patrick because of his lackluster performance in the challenges. I've also seen many seasons of The Mole where the mole is female, or overweight, or older, or some combination of the 3 because it allows them to underperform in physical challenges with a valid reason. However, I suppose I assumed that somewhere in the international Mole code was the provision that the mole can't make alliances, because it's not fair. Yet Patrick and Art allied very early in the game, with Patrick even giving Art a joker(!!!). Maybe you can say the mole making an alliance is a bluff or a cover, but it reeks of favoritism to me. With that said... Patrick being the mole didn't really lessen my enjoyment of the show. And maybe after 11 seasons this was a brand new tactic for the mole to try, I don't know. The only thing I really hated was the final reveal. Soundos gets told she's the loser, and no one's supposed to react, but Art is standing there barely able to contain his grin at knowing he's won. But we're robbed of an emotional reaction shot because they're not going to "reveal" the mole till the next episode? Lame, lame lame. Final thought: Dutch people look kind of elfin.

It just stands out as such a unique and interesting moment. I love that we get to see scenes like that with players interacting with each other outside of the challenges. That's what I love most about the mole - players being able to split off into separate groups to compare notes and wage psychological warfare on each other. I thought Art's tactics were brilliant throughout the whole season but that one moment was just amazing. Unlike other reality shows the Mole always has the most deserving winners. There hasn't been a winner yet from any season in any country that I've hated. I respect them all. That perhaps is the greatest strength of the show - it's impossible to ride coattails, go UTR - you need to be savvy to survive. I thought the way they did the rewind back to the bus ride where they had been told the mole was on the bus with them and shown him sitting there would have been the best mole reveal I've seen from any season but it was spoiled by Soundos being told she's the loser and Art's subsequent reaction. Despite that it is still just about the best Mole season I've seen (I've seen all the AUS, US, UK seasons). Also, the post quiz challenge with the final 4 was one of the best ideas for a challenge I've seen. The challenge itself was nothing special but the idea of having the other players try to get their mole suspect to do certain things to fit their quiz answers was brilliant.

I like how the Mole was revealed at the end, that's great and quite suspenseful. I didn't like how they revealed the loser though. Just a question about Art/Patrick alliance. Since Art had NO CLUE that Patrick was the Mole...when did he start to suspect him??

First of, I'm really happy to read you all enjoyed the series so much!!! I totally agree with you obviously.. Haha.. But I never claimed to be unbiased.. @:-) @CUBic Zirconiyum I actually agree with all what you said here! 1. I don't really see the need for huge budgets either in fact I think that just makes people coming on just in it for the money. Obviously the Dutch 'celebs' are in part in it for their resume and 'exposure' too (i.e. it can't hurt for sure since it still attracts a large audience, in fact an ever growing one still after 11 years since more than 2 million people watched it per episode - which for Dutch standards is very good indeed, bearing in mind also we have some 16 million people living here ;-)) I totally agree with you that some challenges are just as good with a lot less or even no money just game elements to be won. That said I do think sometimes the amounts were somewhat on the low side in some challenges (e.g. as much as I loved the challenge where they collected all the nationalities, I think they could have earned say €250 per person instead of just €100 .. But other than that I think it worked fine. ;-) As for what the purpose was for Pepijn and the non-elimination.. I think they basically needed this since there were 11 episodes and only 10 contestants.. It was pretty clear from the start that episode 1 would probably be a non-elimination round (that certainly doesn't always happen though!) because of this. I think they were just counting on the social pressures and indeed every celeb dreading the idea to be out first and lose face.. Don't discount it because some are still publically teased about this years after... ;-) I liked the twist of the exemption route, I just think that, much like the jokergame in episode 7, it may have had a bit too much of an impact of the events down the line, frankly. But it was a twist and it made for interesting developments.. I wasn't that happy with the jokergame in episode 7 to be honest. I thought it was too late in the game with too much of an impact, with the differences being so small between the remaining contestants. Still think Pepijn got an unfair deal in that sense but that's just my opinion.. ;-) 2. The jokers were introduced in series 6 in Argentina - In fact if you're watching the 5th series now you see they've introduced the 'helper-mole' (hulpmol). Basically I see it as the forerunner of the joker. I am used to them now but there's always been a lot of discussion about them because sometimes they have also been distributed very unevenly indeed, giving some an 'unfair' chance / advantage opposed to others according to some. I'm ok with them now and they do add a good game element I think. In series 8 there was another element added a socalled topito - you had to earn, trade or save 8 pieces to get a full one which was an exemption. But they abandonned that and went back to jokers afterwards which I think is better. :-) 3. I couldn't agree more about the Patrick- Art bromance and Patrick giving the jokers (and essentially putting Art on his trail with that...plus his 'let's mole' ). That fact (plus the jokergame episode 7) are the only two things I did not like about this series.. There was a lot of discussion going on, even a poll: should a Mole be allowed to give away a joker/ influence the game in that sense. About 66% said NO , about 33% said yes. I obviously was in the 'no' camp hehe.. I didn't dislike Patrick as a Mole though I wasn't always that impressed with his mole-ish actions especially where he used his weight, no.. But that I thought shouldn't have happened.. I doubt Art would have ever really been on his trail had he not done that and in the final episode he as much as admits this is why he gave him the jokers, because he was so far off.. That meant Art should have, maybe, gone home instead to me, and others had had a chance to stay... I like Art as a contestant, he makes a great winner since he had great tactics don't get me wrong.. And sure Patrick wanted his fake mole around.. But the reasons given for it were kind of lame (as Karin and Pepijn did a lot of moling too, apart from the real mole imho..) and it just did indeed feel like favoratism...It's never happened like that before and I felt very ambivalent about it because the rules sofar have been (more or less implicitly) clear: The Mole shouldn't influence the game with jokers or information.. 4. Yeah I didn't like the way they revealed Soundos to be the loser either.. In previous Mole editions the winner's been revealed before which was fine since they made it so ambivalent that you still didn't know who was the mole before the final reveal.. I guess this year they still wanted the excitement of the partial reveal and then decided to reveal the loser since the winner would have left no suspense about the Mole's identity at all for the last episode.. I still think they should have just revealed all three in one episode this time because like you said, it was kind of sad for Soundos, and you already pretty much saw what was going to happen judging by Art's expression.. but there you go ;-) Each year constructive criticism.. I definitely felt the same way about the points you made as did many others on the forums, with lots of discussions about it.. But I did really like series 11 on the whole: Beautiful settings, great contestants, nice mix of interesting challenges , funny and smart winner and good enough Mole imho.. and definitely interesting twists.. So I'm very curious what they will come up with for series 12, they should be about filming or about to be filming it now in fact. :-) @nougat It's not exactly clear when Art started suspecting Patrick, he had suspicions about the two jokers and the jeep-challenge but still dismissed it apparently.. I think his suspicions rose when Jan left, and were fed from there on but he was still mostly suspicious of Karin until the very end. I think he played a very smart game in the church with Karin.. He was then almost positive she wasn't the Mole, but planted the seed of doubt in her mind.. (poor Karin, in interviews just before the final reveal she kept saying she really hoped it was Patrick because she'd feel so very duped and betrayed if it turned out to be Art in the end hehe..) That obviously was a brilliant move by him, eliminating Karin who was still focussed on Patrick but clearly confused and worried about Art. @AusSam I did really like that twist in the tree- assignment. The whole setting, much like the whole volcano-challenge, reminded me of Lord of the Rings (Lothlorien, things that will yet come to pass).. Loved that!! Thanks for all the discussion. I do like the jokers as a concept, though I agree Pepijn got screwed by how the joker game shook out in ep7. I had a hunch that Anna was the mole throughout most of the series, starting with Hanna's elimination. Around episode 7 (with the Cerro Negro task), I finally switched it to Soundos. That guess lasted all of one episode until the challenge in the abandoned hospital. One of the codes was "Gr007," which to me was an obvious reference to Karin de Groot. I was basically convinced she was the mole then (even though she did some very un-mole-y things) up until she was eliminated. After that I was mostly upset that my clue was wrong and was just cheering for Art to win. Patrick seemed like a terrible mole to me. First, it seemed like people like Art, Karin and Soundos were constantly losing more money than him. Plus, most of his mole efforts seemed to either fail (the performance task in ep 3) or luckily fall into his lap (the bus race, the map task where he won an exemption). Though I give him credit for throwing the tube away during the underwater labyrinth one. All in all a fun season, thanks for interpreting/uploading it & I look forward to the 2012 season. :)

They made it really obvious like Hannah telling Pepijn he was her mole... and the shots during the quiz near the end where every players suspects are revealed before the execution.

Don't be fooled by that though. Often these votes will be misleading. I remember people voting for the mole according to voiceovers and then getting eliminated, more than once. ;-) Especially when it's a first elimination I wouldn't take it too seriously since people often hedge their bets, so if the voiceover state they vote on one person this can often be misleading. As for Patrick, well I don't know, I thought some people like Pepijn would have made a better mole eg. But then I guess each Mole has to have their own persona that's credible to the others in the group as their camouflage. Also obvious is in the eye of the beholder I guess since I had no problem picking out all the American Moles and all but one of the Moles of the Australian series. And there is such a thing as overthinking matters too when you watch the series too. ;-)

I thought it was weird that he spent more time worrying about whether or not he would be detected... He actually did sabotage a lot and you kind of forget as you watch it, but he pretty much fucked up almost one thing in every episode.

(ok well not rediculously conspicuous but at least a little more confident ;-)) I didn't like that in his explanations either but since epi 3 approximately I was hedging my bets between Pepijn and Patrick as Mole. There were good arguments to both of them (especially after epi 6 I think, wrt Pepijn). Patrick behaved in a way a Mole never had done before in giving the jokers, therefore allowing a bias in competition between contestants imo (both by giving them an advantage as well as by impregnating the seed of doubt in their minds about his motivations to do so..) - A benefit most other contestants didn't have. Apart from how I feel about Patrick as a Mole (and yeah he did a decent job on the whole, disregarding his yearning for acceptance from Art and everyone else imo :-/) I just feel that's something that should not have happened, period. There was no need for it either way. I think the series was perfectly fine without the Mole getting involved in that sense. However if other people can find it in their hearts to forgive and understand in the bigger picture, I will too. I still have mixed feelings. I think Patrick didn't do badly as a Mole overall (he came up with a very interesting sabotage even if I saw right through it at the time ;-)) but the way he's been going about it, non-assertively, makes it sound like it wasn't really his choice, his doing anyway. Which is sad since he had some cool actions. I guess wrt male-moles you're always juggling this factor?! Either their ego's are too big to not allow them to be submitted to the bigger cause, or they are too subservient & obedient to really carry out what their adopted mole-persona promisses. I guess maybe Male mole's have a tougher job than female moles in that respect since ego isn't that big of a deal for most of us women in that sense anyway. ;-) Anyway, thanx lots for your perspective, really enjoyed reading it/ them! ;-)' Last Edited By: Jazzzed 12/26/11 04:02 PM.
