While I don't disagree that he leaves out things that don't support his argument (which, to me, is perfectly permissible in any polemic), I've never been convinced by the people who claim to have caught him out in a lie or even an honest mistake. The incident that comes to mind is that in which Sanjay Gupta raked him over the coals only to issue a belated apology to Moore. Which reminds me, for some reason Moore attracts as much hatred from the moderate left as from conservatives. I guess I could understand the frustration with his Nader endorsement, etc. But a lot of it just seems to be kabuki-like attempts to prove their centrist credentials. This is why CNN is horrible, they are even more self-conscious about positioning themselves ideologically than the two avowedly partisan news networks.

That's fine, but no one should confuse them with news reports or real documentaries (if any exist nowadays). Moore is advocating a particular moral and political viewpoint, not objectively presenting all sides of a story.

Well that's an issue as old as Leni Riefenstahl, it's pretty hard to make a documentary about politics that is apolitical it's even harder to do it well.

But I get the impression that some people think he is presenting "the facts", when that is certainly not the case. I don't think he even makes any effort to be objective. And again, there's nothing wrong with that, so long as no one confuses propaganda with objective reporting.

I jsut saw a documentary about Bernard Madoff that used recreations, etc., and no one is screaming that it is undermining the integrity of documentaries. FOX News is just right wing Michael Moore. Al'Jizzera = biased to arabic views anti Israel MSNBC = biased to liberal viewpoints All I'm saying is, don't make MM out to be a supervillain when he's just trying to do the same as everyone else. But at least arguably his fictions are good hearted that mean to, fix healthcare, stop gun violence, lower corporate greed and avarice and give more power to the middle class.

One of my professors got him to give a talk to a screenwriting seminar I took at UMich - there were maybe 12 of us in the class. He and his wife showed up and chatted with us about making documentaries for a couple hours. I loved Roger & Me and thought he was really cool and down to earth when he talked to us. But then he seemed to get more and more strident with each documentary. Nowadays I just wish he would lose 50 or 70 pounds and act more like Errol Morris, whom I consider one of the best documentary filmmakers alive today. I'm not too crazy about Moore's politics either, but then I'm always suspicious of any idealogue. At least he's not a teabagger.

I guess I'll have to netflix it to be sure. eta: sheesh, could those people take themselves any more seriously? i've seen it twice...Moore avoids her like the plague when asked to sit down for an interview explaining some of the content that was "staged", like Smith cutting him off at the shareholders meeting. she finally gave up after chasing him for yrs. also the gun for opening an account at the bank...they were held in an safe miles from the bank. does anyone believe they actually handed them over the counter?

Posts: 24492 (09/23/11 03:45 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts	errol morris is amazing. anywho, a friend of mine who is a writer saw m. moore on the upper west side in the mid nineties. walked up and gave him a copy of his 'zine. moore called him a couple of days later and said he liked it and could he buy a subscription. my friend said that he didn't think he was going to be able to publish it for awhile because he was broke. moore asked him how much it cost to print and he said $1000. moore's wife called my friend the next day and said she had a check for him for $5k, that moore only asked that if he became successful that he pay it forward. yeah, i know it's a feely good hippie story but it's true.
