You could see Mommy bringing the fiance back from mile away. If the espionage thing is going to work, they need to pick the pace up, I think. Personally, I think the French chick would have made a much better spy. And this may be nitpicky, but if its 1963, that conversation about the Mets in the cockpit was wrong. They were talking like the Mets were a brand new team...but the Mets started play a year earlier. In fact, their 1962 season was historically bad. That talk would not have happened like that in 1963.

Here is one of pilots from the 50's link. I don't think the pilot is necessarily too young. I think the airlines took lots of military trained pilots, and this guy could have been a Korea pilot or even a war hero type. We may learn more about him. I knew a Pan Am pilot from the early 70s and he was hot as hell, 30s, married to a former stewardess, flew international flights. Back then pilots made pretty good money (unlike now.) Meh, I buy it. (Agree that most would probably be older though.)

I like Collette's backstory, and all of the spy stuff. The translation of the stanza of the song she sang. (first stanza) During the Nazi era, only the first stanza was used Germany, Germany above everything, Above everything in the world, When, for protection and defence, it always takes a brotherly stand together. Was there some unspoken rule you couldn't say you were Jewish in the 1960's? I also love the spy plot. I hope they advance it even more and not screw it up in any way.

I think it's totally fine for them to just focus on them traveling the world and going through history (those historical-laced episodes are my favorite kinds on other shows lol). I do love Colette, I think she's my favorite. The writing can do a little better though. I mean, when the pilot was suddeny just like "How old were you when the Nazis occupied France?" lmao. Srsly? And there's a lot of exposition spewed out that is unnecessary. But the way they did Colette's backstory was kind of perfect - stick with that.

Other parts, I kind of zone out and consider reading a book while I wait for it to pick up. Colette is the most interesting character. I hope they expand on her more than the others. I've never liked Christina Ricci. Her character is even annoying. The spy plot is okay. If they either amp it up or make it more of an aside type thing it would be better. Right now the time spent on the spy stuff seems disproportionate somehow. I guess what I'm saying is I don't love or hate it. Yet. I'll try to stick with it and see how it Pans out. heh

She hates the Germans because France was occupied when she was a child and her parents were killed and then France was under harsh German rule for about 4 years. Thousands and thousands of French were killed. It wasn't only Jews who were killed in WWII and hate the Nazis and Germany.

Colette is far and away the best character on the show. It's gotta pick it up in the ratings though, it's lost 4 million viewers since the 1st episode, down to a 1.9 share. Yikes. ABC's also got GCB breathing down its neck for the time spot.

Have always like Collette the most, and her part of last night's show was strong strong strong. They finally also seemed to decide what Ricci would be: comic relief, at least for the episode. I liked that. Unlike SA, I LOVE her. Most daring part of last night's eppie, IMO? "He's not MY president."

Her sequence insulting the kraut exec while maintaining her Pan Am composure was absolutely riveting. At first I was a little askeert of them turning an aviation drama into a Cold War drama, but it's working. I wonder if the the East German courier chick might apply for the next stewardess class. BTW of all the JFK people to retcon into the story, they go with William Manchester? Bold choice. This series is turning out to be about as good as I'd hoped. These ratings are troubling, though, and it's only going to get worse once the NFL flex scheduling kicks in in a few weeks. What I'd like to know is how much of an effect the CBS football overruns are having on the situation -- so far, the first half hour of Pan Am has been up against the last half hour of The Good Wife, which is a show so good that I don't think any new show could beat it, so there's simply no contest there. I'm hoping that once we see it squared off against CSI Miami, we'll see it firmly taking #2 against Sunday Night Football. ETA: Good news on the ratings! And yet, I keep wondering, what does all of this spy stuff have to do with Pan Am? Also, I cannot get past how young the pilots are. Weren't the airline pilots of 1963 all WW2 vets and Korea vets in their 30s and 40s? It would be plausible to have one young guy as a junior officer, but as it stands, the senior pilots look barely old enough to shave.

Go see Sarah's Key it's really a great movie about the French and WWII from a different point of view.

Remove this ad Was not expecting any post WWII stuff to make its way into this show, but it actually worked really well. I loved how they mentioned Colette had never been to Germany as a stewardess in the beginning and explained why so perfectly throughout the episode.
