You know, he's not that whiny.  In fact, he's painfully real which is why I think so many people are identifying with him.  And, his obsession with being eliminated has forced Cochran to make some big moves in the game (i.e. Elyse) which have saved him from Redemption Island so far.  If for some reason Ozzy gets eliminated in the Duel AND the merge does happen next week, the other tribe will thank Cochran for squashing their biggest threat.  Coach and the others will be so confidant that he won't win any individual immunity challenges that they will ignore targeting him and he'll be safe until the end.  Once in the finale, he'll win because he outsmarted them all and they'll see that this single move against Ozzy was a turning point in the game and give Cochran "the almighty nerd" the million bucks.  That's my prediction anyway.

Elyse removal has absolute nothing to do with Cochran , it was Jim doing all the planning and legwork and Ozzy going to redemption is all Ozzy , nothing to do with the nerd. Honestly , he has done nothing so far , what big moves ? The guy is like a cockroach , difficult to kill but not because he's such a manipulative strategic mastermind but rather he's been a lucky SOB who has somehow managed to skate through TC since day 1. 

If there's a merge though , it will work in his favor as normally , a useless challenge player like him will get ignored for the bigger threats like Keith & Jim.

Sugar comparisons are silly.  We've been shown over and over that Cochran IS liked by his tribe; specific TC discussions have revolved around it.  Considering him for every boot is not because they didn't like him, it's in spite of liking him.  They consider him a challenge liability.  That's it. But they still keep cheering him on and encouraging him.

As far as being a social or strategic failure, that's complete b.s.  He WAS involved with the Elyse boot.  Yes, it was shown to be Jim's plan, but it was implemented partially by Cochran savvying it to Dawn, and letting her feel like it was her coming around to it, instead of him coming to her with an agenda.  That's good social and strategic play.  

He's a law student.  Usually the law people on the show are specifically targeted because, well, folks don't much like lawyers, but more so because they know law folks can do some good talking, and that's threatening and untrustworthy.  He's already shown that he can do this at the Semhar boot TC, but he also did it in that funny Cochran-y way that made it seem less obvious; he still took control of the situation, though.  So he tones it down to seem harmless, and it's also been shown since the beginning that he makes them laugh, he entertains through self-deprecation and he has the early confessional about wondering whether these social abilities with people are enough to win the million dollars.  He's got very intact social game.  I think his ability to make a cogent argument (again, as shown in multiple confessionals and at the Semhar TC) might serve him quite well if he makes it to the end.  Shit, he wrote a damned law school paper on the Survivor jury dynamics; I think he'd understand how to work one pretty well.  

As far as lucking into his fate so far, gimme a break.  He's been considered for every boot, and managed to adapt to the immediate situation and see how it can serve his own survival best.  He's always shown expressing this in confessionals, and is shown to be focused on how he can make the immediate situation keep him in the game for three more days.  As a constant boot consideration, that's pretty damned legitimate surviving strategy to me, and great game play.  And that's really all the game is about, surviving to the end, and then being able to successfully face the jury.  How many times have we heard from him, as he narrates the meat of what's going on "...and that's good for me because...".  That's good play.  He adapts and takes advantage of the situation, playing as much as he needs to, but not too much, to keep himself from being booted and keep the main boot attention off of him.  Given his position as a physically weak player, he's playing about as strong as he can.
