I pretty much agree with this, although Yul's idol actually guaranteed him F3. He's one of the best jury strategists we've ever seen, but in game we didn't really see him do anything special.

And the twists were mostly in Yul's favor, anyway. Yes, the mutiny put him in a big numbers disadvantage, but wasn't Candice, at least, planning on jumping over after the merge anyway? In hindsight, she would have been better off had she stuck with Aitu; the mutiny just revealed a threat that Yul didn't expect. Then, of course, there was the bottle twist after Rebecca was voted out, and the overpowered HII...and the switch to a F3 for the first time ever. Like him or not, Ozzy had the best shot of winning had there been a F2.

it didn't guarantee him F3...it was a one time play...of course Raro would have had to sacrifice somebody to get rid of Yul's idol, but they easily could have gone to Yul and told him they were gonna vote for him so he should vote their low man on the totem pole out...then they would have a working relationship with Yul...they actually gave Yul a free ride to the F3 by not flushing out his idol...so your alternatives to sacrificing a member of the Raro alliance is Yul gets a free ride to F3, its not his fault that the Raro's didn't understand this...

I'm aware that the idol was good for only one use, but it was so powerful that it was unlikely it would come to that. Penner basically had three options when Yul showed him the idol. He could:

1. Flip and vote with Aitu, hoping to regain some trust with them (which he did).
2. Convince Aitu to vote against Nate, ensuring that he (Penner) would be safe when the idol was played, then vote with Raro against Aitu...then take his chances with the purple rock in the next round as the tribes would be 4 against 4.
3. Tell the Raros outright that Yul had shown him the idol and convince them to vote Becky or Sundra instead.

I'm not sure why he didn't do the third option (or even if he did and it was edited out), as it seems it would have been his only real chance of winning the game (if he had any at that point), but the idol's sheer power meant either of the first two options was terrible for Penner, but that he probably had a better shot of going further with the first one. The fact that Survivor is an individual game meant that every member of the Raros would probably have been hesitant to "sacrifice" a member of their alliance, since they couldn't know if it wasn't going to be them and since they were only up 5-4 at that point. Even if they had voted Becky or Sundra, they would have had to bank off of Ozzy losing immunity (which, as it turns out, he did) at the F8 or F7 so that they could safely split the votes once Aitu was down to 2 (thanks to the bottle twist, they didn't have the numbers to do this when Aitu was at 3). That would have given them a better shot at flushing the idol without risking going home, but still not foolproof.

Yes, Raro didn't take the best path they could have. As you said, Yul can't be blamed for that...but he certainly can't be credited for that, as he did nothing to cause that. He played the idol as well as he could have, but it could easily have backfired and wouldn't have worked at all had it not been so powerful to begin with. The way it was, it kept him from being in danger ever, including the TC right before the FTC, unless someone was willing to risk that they would be the one voted out in order to flush it. Even if it wasn't 100% guaranteed to bring him to the FTC, it was still insanely powerful and, practically speaking, was almost strong enough to actually be the guarantee.
