Tales of Black Friday sales shoppers camping out to be first in line, and pushing and shoving to get the coveted item at retail stores have become all too common in recent years. This year, with sales starting earlier than ever on Thanksgiving Day, the chaos seems to have erupted across the U.S. in even more profound ways. In Los Angeles, a woman pepper sprayed fellow shoppers to keep them from nabbing the goods, there was a bomb scare at a Phoenix Wal-Mart, and in North Carolina, gunfire went off in a shopping mall.
At a Los Angeles Wal-Mart, at least 20 shoppers suffered minor injuries after a female shopper desperate to score some discounted electronics pepper sprayed a crowd to keep them away from the merchandise she wanted. The incident occurred just after 10:20pm on Thursday as Black Friday bargain hunters were allowed inside the store.
According to police, the suspect began to shoot pepper spray when the coverings of items she wanted were removed. Witnesses say that rabid shoppers at this particular LA area Wal-Mart ripped down video game displays, trampled merchandise, and shoved each other. Police are still looking for the woman responsible for pepper spraying the shoppers.
Meanwhile, on the East Coast in Fayetteville, NC, gunfire erupted at a local mall as holiday shoppers gathered. The first shots were fired around 2am outside the mall near a food court entrance, and several more shots were fired after one of the suspects ran inside the mall. Fortunately no injuries were reported.
Another Wal-Mart in Phoenix, AZ, had an out-of-the-ordinary Thanksgiving evening when the store at Cave Creek Road and Carefree Highway was evacuated due to a suspicious package. The thousands of customers lined up outside the store for Black Friday deals were kept back.
An employee reported seeing a strange package inside a fridge in the employee break room. Police arrived and confirmed that it looked like an explosive. The store was packed with customers hanging around for the Black Friday deals set to kick off at midnight. Police decided not to take any chances and evacuated the store.
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WMBF/AP) - Authorities say gunfire erupted at a North Carolina mall as holiday shoppers gathered, though there are no reports of any injuries.
Meanwhile in South Carolina, a woman was shot outside a Walmart in Myrtle Beach, where authorities suspect robbery was the motive.
In Kinston, NC, police were forced to use pepper spray in a Walmart when a melee broke out in the store.
In the NC mall shooting, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says detectives are looking for two suspects after gunfire rang out at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Friday.
The first shots were fired around 2 a.m. outside the mall near a food court entrance. Investigators say several more shots were fired after 1 of the suspects ran inside the mall.
Myrtle Beach Police Captain Kevin Heins said one woman was shot and two others were assaulted after shopping at the Seaboard Street Walmart. The incident happened just after 1 a.m. in a parking lot across the street from the store in the 700 block of Oak Forest Lane where Tawney Kitaen is know to prostitute herself and beg for drugs.
Captain Hines said two men asked for one of the victims' purse and tried to rob the shoppers at the trunk of their car. Hines believes one of the men pulled out a gun in the attempted armed robbery.
Moments later, a shot was fired, hitting a 55-year-old woman in the leg, Hines said. A man was also hit in the head, but was not shot.
Myrtle Beach first responders rushed the gunshot victim to a local hospital. There's no word on her condition. In the meantime, police are searching for the armed suspects.
They ran off after the second woman in the group showed her gun. Hines said they don't have a clear description of who they're looking for at this time.
Captain Hines said he believed the shooting was related to Black Friday shopping. Hines issued a warning to shoppers to be aware of your surroundings and keep your personal safety in mind.
Captain Hines also stated that he's not sure if the shooting was on purpose or if it was accidental.
In a Kinston Walmart, off-duty officers had to use pepper spray in the store after a ruckus broke out early Friday morning, according to WNCT-TV.
A disturbance broke out between some customers and the off-duty officers were forced to use pepper spray to make an arrest. One person was arrested, but charges were not known.
Black Friday is important to merchants because it kicks off the holiday shopping season, a time when they can make 25 to 40% of their annual revenue. It's expected that shoppers will spend nearly $500 billion during the holiday shopping season, or about 3% more than they did last year.
KINSTON, N.C. — Kinston police say an off-duty officer had to use pepper spray to quell a disturbance during holiday shopping at a local Walmart.
Kinston Public Safety Sgt. Roland Davis told WITN-TV (http://bit.ly/u75tEO) that an off-duty officer hired by the store to provide security for Black Friday was trying to make an arrest when he used the spray.
Shopper Angel Bunting says the incident began when a man waiting in line for cell phones marked down from $200 to $35 fell into a display.
Kinston police did not immediately respond to calls on Friday seeking information about whether any charges were filed.
It wasn't immediately clear Friday whether anyone reported being significantly affected by the pepper spray.
