You could tell Jeff didn't really appreciate Sophie's win, and the editing pretty much reflects that. If there were no returnees / stunt casting this season Sophie could have received a very unique and entertaining winner's edit. Instead she got shoehorned into a Danni / Natalie role, without having the appropriate material to fill it.

TV shows are all about their ratings. If they don't have good ratings, they don't stay on TV, and sucksters don't get to post about them. I think they could have shown more about Sophie, and and a few superfans would have been interested and happy. But, all the screaming Ozzy fans (that you could hear throughout the reunion show) would have gotten bored and changed the channel. Changing channels means less ratings which means no survivor for folks who would more interested in seeing more of Sophie. Ozzies and Coaches and Robs and Russels edits are a necessary evil if you all want to keep watching sufvivor. Edited because I can't type - and there's probably still plenty of errors. Posts: 462 (12/20/11 02:41 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Sophie got a good edit. She slept a lot and was a brat. She didn't do any strategic thinking except stay true to her Day 1 alliance. Even her throwing Brandon under the bus to Coach wasn't strategic: it wasn't designed to have Coach take her to the end, e.g., like Sandra did with Russell in HvV. She genuinely believed Brandon could win the game. Sophie was boring and unlikeable. In 23 seasons of Survivor, the editors have managed to find redeeming qualities for every winner and paint every winner in a somewhat positive light, even if they don't hide away their negative qualities. The fact that Sophie was shown the way she was shown pretty much establishes that they didn't have much to work with.

I don't think she came across as that egotistical, just confident. But with the returning players coming back and sucking up time, and with redemption island pissing away even more time, it's impossible to give any of the characters any real depth. Also, Ozzy wouldn't shut up, and since the producers seemed to think that everything he did and said was gold, they couldn't stand to not dedicate at least 9 minutes to just him per episode... I was pulling for Sophie most of the time, and it was because I didn't think she came across as a stuck up ass hole like Ozzy, Albert, Jim, Keith, Whitney, or a few others.

Seriously everytime I was seeing his face I Just wanted to kick his face. And if somebody is THAT boring and uncharming then why even cast them on the show in the first place!?!? So I'm coming back to thinking they control the edits so that they can choose three or four favorites so that the viewers only vote one of those four for the $100,000. That's all.

Granted, that's not an illegitimate way to win, and Sophie played it well, but it doesn't really make for a root-able winner. -- She's kind of level-headed and normal and doesn't really speak in the sound-bytes that make for good confessionals. I mean, I watched all the Insider clips this season, and nothing Sophie ever said came across as funny or entertaining. It wasn't a situation like Sandra, or even Natalie, where I was like, "Why didn't they show this!?" I was always thinking, "She's smart, but I can see why they left this out." -- I wouldn't consider her condescending or arrogant. She's just smart and unapologetic about it. Personally, I like people like that. Many folks don't, and apparently most of Savaii didn't like her. I can imagine there weren't many confessionals saying how awesome Sophie was, and there were probably several where she was called a spoiled bitch. Since the show no longer allows winners to have any negativity attached to their edits, a lot of what would have made Sophie a three-dimensional character had to be cut out. Not that I think she cares. She has a million reasons to not give a shit about how she was portrayed on the show.

The fact that she's clearly very socially awkward - her post-show interviews show she isn't a big fan of being in the spotlight (and I realize in a season where Coach is doing tai chi and Ozzy is conquering trees and Brandon is battling the devil and Cochran is playing Encyclopedia Brown Defeats Survivor, that's hard to understand). That she doesn't have the kind of looks that the cameramen like to linger over ridiculously (Parvo). That Brandon/Coach/Ozzy/RI were sucking up every last bit of episode time. When they did show her I thought she was very interesting - scheming, arguing, winning.

It lacked truth and specificity, thereby leaving the viewers (jurors) unsatisfied. Unfortunately, an accurate edit may have been bad for ratings (or maybe not since people would have rooted for Ozzy even more).
