Next, Edna, Cochran, Jim, Keith, Whitney and Dawn would never have voted for Brandon. Post game, players have many reasons to lie. Everyone in the majority alliance "wormed" their way into the majority alliance. To single Sophie out for doing exactly what everyone else did is ridiculous. One person made the proposal so one didn't worm his way into it. That person wasn't Sophie.

However, Sophie had more luck than many other winners. She wasn't the leader, she wasn't the one making any strategic decisions---that was all Coach and to a lesser extent Albert. In fact I would say her and Albert are on the same level with the exception that she won a few more IC. She bascially just stuck to one alliance and never had to do anything which is not her fault but that is the main reason why there are unfavorable opinions about her. End rant.

I've finally read some interviews and ran across this that probably explains your enthusiasm for her win: Sophie said: Well, I'll say in the first 10 days in the game, Albert and I were very close and we talked a lot about what we wanted to do. We could have easily went with Christine Shields Markoski and Stacey Powell and Mikayla Wingle and Rick Nelson -- because Albert and I had a Final 3 alliance with Rick -- and voted out Coach. It was our decision at the time that we thought Coach could be a possible Final 3 goat, so we kept him in. And that was our stance all throughout the pre-Upolu merge. And then when it came to the merge, we -- I constantly kept re-evaluating, "Is Coach the right person?" And there were a lot of instances when I could have turned against him because Rick was aligned with me and not with Coach. We also kept on Whitney Duncan, and I don't think that Coach had the same opportunities throughout the entire game to turn against Albert and I. You know, Christine and Stacey would not have aligned with him. It's just -- I never felt like the game was out of my control. But then: Coach said: I mean, everybody at that time is going to say things like that because think about it. Did Albert think that he was in control of the game? Yeah. Did I think I was in control of the game? Yeah. Did Sophie think she was in control of the game? Absolutely. I think that it didn't bother me at all when they made those comments. We all carried each other if you think about it. The three of us -- through good times, bad times -- Sophie wanted Albert off at one time. Albert wanted Sophie off at one point. Coach has the more accurate perception. Every single player out there thinks that their game is the best, think that the conversations they have are the important ones but it is the sum of all those discussions that matters and no one sees the sum of it all. The only reality is the vote and Upolu's Tribal Councils never came down to a decision between Coach and someone else but it certainly did come down to Sophie or someone else at both of the F5s. I call those results luck, not control.

However, her ineptitude in the social game (her self-confessed closest Upolu allies in Rick and Edna didn't vote for her!) meant that she had to rely on too many factors outside of her control very late to win. From this perspective (and only in relation to this) she is not unlike Fabio. As I've said in Edgic she wouldn't have won if any of these outside-of her-control events had not occurred: Her self-confessed humanizing TC breakdown, Ozzy's admitted choke in the final challenge and the Albert/Brandon immunity brouhaha which gave her any votes Albert might have had. Panurge, I think you're wrong to blame the editing. I think the editing was an accurate reflection of what happened in real life. Sophie won playing an observant but very inert game which only came together very late. It's no coincidence that her Reunion tribute montage contained a majority of scenes not shown before the finale. Editing-wise, the season was about others and they, like Coach, Cochran, Dawn, Jim, Brandon, Ozzy, were crafted beuatifully. It was only about Sophie in the finale. I understand the argument that the editors should make an effort to explain and justify the winner a bit better but I think that what they did was an accurate depiction of the reality.

Actually, there were many interesting confessionals that Sophie had on the Insider which were better than the narration rubbish they showed. In that sense, the editors cheated us of her story. As for the edit of the others, it still amounted to a boring season so it couldn't have been that beautifully crafted. Cochran, for instance, was a big part of the story and Jeff's words when he left showed that the intent was for the viewers to enjoy his journey yet a large portion of the audience hated him and wanted him gone ASAP. The same happened with Mikayla who had confessionals that connected her to the audience and thus destroyed Brandon's story yet he ended up as the one the editors wanted us to like. How is that good craftsmanship? If they had shown her flirts with Albert, we would have understood Brandon's rant a bit better.

After the initial sequence, we got to hear his perspective more than hers. I originally had Mikayla on my winner's radar but discounted her chances after that. I agree that the season was boring strategically and, obviously, I share with you the puzzlement over the care and energy put into the Cochran (and the overall Sevaii) edit. However, I really appreciated other aspects of the edit, such as the relationship between Coach and Brandon. You know, it would have been awesome if one more Sophie vote had gone to Coach with Brandon becoming the deciding vote. That would have made the overall season's edit even more meaningful! You left off the most revealing part about Benjamin's answer to that question: "I'm just glad that neither one of them really wanted me off, because if either one of them would have voted me off, they would have gotten their way. So I think that it was like a mutually-benefiting alliance. We all helped each other. I mean, if we all look at it honestly, all three of us helped each other all the way until the end." In other words, Benjamin was not in control.

I wanted to show that Sophie wasn't always in control as she claimed. Of course, one person can't do much if the others gang up on him but the important thing is how the votes get decided and there, Coach had more control. We saw that Sophie's claim that she, not Coach, had the alliance with Rick was BS when Rick voted with Coach to eliminate Mikayla. Again, at the merge, Coach was the one that took control by flipping Cochran. At F5, Coach had her fate in his hands, not the other way around. Making an alliance is only words.
