Holiday is good, though not as good as either Bringing up Baby or The Philadelphia Story. Director George Cukor tested a young Rita Hayworth for the part of Hepburn's sister in Holiday, but passed as he felt Hayworth wasn't experienced enough yet for the role. If she had been, I wonder how Holiday would have worked out?

Robert O had mentioned it was made on the heels of Bringing up baby. How one movie could be so good, and the next so not I don't know. Hepburn sure was volatile in her day. Hearing how she was banned from the Columbia studios lot for years was interesting. The story was just goofy. They were so in love after 10 days? The way Hepburn and Grant got together seemed like a forced conflict. Later this week I will be watching Penny Serenade. I hope it's good!

They were both fine Screwball Comedy directors, but they're quite different. Bringing Up Baby has a lot more energy and drive than Cukor's Holiday. I can't imagine Cukor directing Red River (John Wayne and Montgomery Clift) or Howard Hawks helming The Women (Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford). Hawks was much more "cinematic" in his directing style while Cukor had more of a stage bent. They both produced some great films, but their styles and temperments were quite different.

Posts: 99 (12/28/11 10:05 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Ah, a perfect day to be talking about Howard Hawks. He's one of the many reasons I don't think the Oscars are worth taking seriously. Never won, and worse yet was only nominated once (Sergeant York). What I do think is worth taking seriously is the National Film Registry, and this morning Howard Hawks's Twentieth Century was added to the Registry. This is his 7th NFR film, joining previously inducted Scarface, Bringing Up Baby, Sergeant York, The Big Sleep, Red River, and The Thing from Another World. Well, only 25 films can make it each year, and at most usually only one or two animated films (feature or short) are added each year. So few slots, so much great animation. Disney is (deservedly) well represented. Snow White was in the charter class of 1989. Then, Fantasia in 1990, Pinocchio in 1994, Steamboat Willie in 1998, Beauty & the Beast in 2002, and the lesser known 1933 cartoon Three Little Pigs named in 2007. It's like great players waiting to be voted into the Hall of Fame. 2011 is Bambi's year. R.O. hawked a book last night, and I really want to read the eassya about the most recent adds... So I saw Tootsie last night, speaking of NFR. I loved it so much in the day; but it seems kind of overrated now. Am I right or wrong?
