Midnight in Paris (Allen)02. The Skin I live In (Almodovar)03. Project Nim (Marsh)04. Hugo (Scorsese)05. A Separation (Farhadi)06. Descendants (Payne)07. 50/50 (Levine)08. Insidious (Wan)09. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (Fincher)10. Meek's Cutoff (Reichhardt)It's pretty funny as so many of the films I rank highly this year are homages to older silent films. Skin I live In is more inspired by Eyes without a Face, but Midnight in Paris, Insidious, and Hugo all focus on different types and styles of silent films. Insidious has pretty strong roots in Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Vampyr, Nosferatu, and Sunrise, while Hugo and Midnight in Paris openly pay respects to silent film makers. It's kind of sad how the Academy doesn't really acknowledge or homage films that predate Gone with the Wind. I hope you mean "Project Nim" and not the Abigail Breslin film. Lol. Great list though! Still not a fan of Descendants but this makes me want to watch Insidious more.
