What I love about the NFR is that it doesn't pit films against each other, doesn't try to rank them, and doesn't talk about what's best or better.  The criteria is that a film has to have some enduring cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.  If a film doesn't meet that criteria, even if it's a very good film, it's not going to make the Registry.  Or, even it meets the criteria, it might have to wait years before it gets its nod because only 25 a year can be named and the National Film Preservation Board, who narrow the field of nominees every year, and the Librarian of Congress, who makes the final decision, try to make sure each year's list of additions can stand on its own, and help the entire Registry continue to represent the broadest spectrum of American film.

Each year there will be 4 to 5 relatively well-known Hollywood movies that will get virtually all the press and public attention, but the glory of the NFR is the other 75% of the additions, those films most of us never heard of, much less seen:  shorts, silents, home movies, newsreels, avant-garde, PSAs, documentaries, cartoons, serials, and all the movies that were never nominated for an Oscar and will never show up on one of the AFI's lists.  Despite years of neglect which destroyed half or more of all American films ever made, our film heritage is still extraordinary in breadth and number.  Ain't it grand that people are working their asses off to make sure that heritage is preserved for future generations!

CGI here's a present for you.  Don't know anyone who would say it's "better" than Bambi or Dumbo, nevertheless I'm glad it's on the NFR.
