The Iron Man of heavy metal has lymphoma.
Tony Iommi, iconic guitarist of Black Sabbath, has been diagnosed with the “early stages” of the disease, according to a statement issued by the band’s publicist.
The press release featured a message from the band asking fans to “send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time.”
Iommi is currently working with is doctors to establish the best treatment plan. “The Iron Man... remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery,” read the statement.
The news comes at a pivotal time for Sabbath. Several months ago, the original foursome announced its plans to write and produce their first new studio album in 33 years. They’ve been recording in Los Angeles, but according to Rolling Stone, they’ll move production to England to accommodate the guitarist. The album, originally planned for release this fall, is being produced by uber-rock dial twister Rick Rubin.
Sabbath’s reunion tour was set to kick off May 18 in Moscow, but it’s unclear if they’ll be able to honor that start date.
Iommi published his highly entertaining autobiography at the end of last year, “Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath.”
The press release promised “further information” on Iommi’s health “as it becomes available.”
