Gary Carter Health Takes Turn For the Worse By Derek Johnson on January 20th, 2012 New York Mets Hall of Fame catcher, Gary Carter, says doctors found “very small tumors” after he had an MRI on Friday in Florida. The daughter of former New York Mets great Gary Carter revealed in her online journal on Thursday that her father’s health has taken a turn for the worse. In the journal she wrote that Carter’s doctor “told my mom that there are now several new spots/tumors on my dad’s brain.” “I write these words with tears because I am so sad for my dad,” she said. Carter’s doctor was scheduled to meet with the family Thursday night “to talk to the family about the next step,” Carter’s daughter said, adding that she will continue to update everyone about her father’s health. She began the journal post saying the past week “has been one of the hardest weeks for my dad.” On Thursday, Carter, also a former manager of the Long Island Ducks, went for a follow up appointment and fell in the hallway while he was leaving, and required medical assistance. That fall followed up a fall Carter had on Christmas Eve, and the MRI revealed that he completely tore his rotator cuff, his daughter said. “It is very painful and needs surgery,” she wrote, “but all dad can do right now is rehab to heal.” Carter also had an MRI on his brain while he was in North Palm Beach, Florida, and the results were sent to Duke University for evaluation. Carter’s diagnosis was revealed last summer when he released a statement through the Mets saying doctors found “very small tumors” on his brain. Over his 19-year career Carter batted .262 with 324 homers and 1,225 RBIs. The 11-time All-Star was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He appeared in eight straight All-Star games from 1981-1988. Carter also won three Gold Glove awards over his career. He is also a member of the Mets 1986 World Series team. During the season he batted .255 with 24 home runs and 105 RBIs. He played for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1974-1992. Carter played his final game with the Expos. After the 2009 season Carter left the Long Island Ducks to be closer to home.

Police and hospital officials said Angelopoulos suffered serious head injuries and died at a hospital after being hit by a motorcycle while walking across a road close to a movie set near Athens' main port of Piraeus.
The driver, also injured and hospitalized, was later identified as an off-duty police officer.
The accident occurred while Angelopoulos was working on his upcoming movie "The Other Sea."
Angelopoulos had won numerous awards for his movies, mostly at European film festivals, during a career that spanned more than 40 years.
In 1995, he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for "Ulysses' Gaze," starring American actor Harvey Keitel.
Born in Athens in 1935, Angelopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece during World War II and the ensuing 1946-49 Greek Civil War — recurring themes in his early films.
He studied law at Athens University, but eventually lost interest and moved to France where he studied film at the Institute of Advanced Cinematographic Studies in Paris.
After returning to Greece, he worked as a film critic for a small, left-wing newspaper and started to make films during the 1967-74 dictatorship.
Described as mild-mannered but uncompromising, Angelopoulos' often sad and slow-moving films mostly dealt with issues from Greece's turbulent recent history: war, exile, immigration and political division.
It was not until 1984 with "Voyage to Kythera" that his scripts were written in collaboration with others.
Angelopoulos mostly attracted art-house audiences, using established actors including Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau in two of his most widely acclaimed films, "The Bee Keeper" and "The Suspended Stride of the Stalk."

Excalibur actor Nicol Williamson dies at 75 Scottish actor Nicol Williamson, best known for his role as the wizard Merlin in the 1981 film Excalibur, has died aged 75, his family has announced. The actor passed away of oesophageal cancer shortly before Christmas in Amsterdam, where he lived. A much respected stage actor, he was nominated for his first Tony Award in 1966 for Inadmissible Evidence. Playwright John Osborne once called him "the greatest actor since Marlon Brando." Williamson was nominated for his second Tony Award in 1974, for his role in Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. He won a Drama Desk award the same year for the role. He made his professional stage debut at the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1960, before appearing in Tony Richardson's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Court Theatre. He later teamed up with Richardson again, to star his Hamlet production at the Roundhouse. It was so successful, it transferred to Broadway and was adapted into a film, which co-starred Anthony Hopkins and Marianne Faithfull. In a statement on the actor's website, his son Luke Williamson said: "It's with great sadness, and yet with a heart full of pride and love for a man who was a tremendous father, friend, actor, poet, writer and singer, that I must bring news of Nicol's passing." He went on to say his father passed "peacefully" ending his two struggle with cancer. "He gave it all he had: never gave up, never complained, maintained his wicked sense of humour to the end. His last words were 'I love you'. I was with him, he was not alone, he was not in pain." The actor's son Luke Williamson, said his father was also survived by his wife, Jill Townsend.

Riot guitarist Mark Reale has died in Texas at the age of 56.
The heavy metal musician passed away at a hospital in San Antonio on Wednesday after suffering complications relating to Crohn’s disease, a condition he battled for many years.
Reports suggest the star also suffered bleeding in his brain earlier this month and spent the last two weeks in a coma.
A statement from the band reads:
“To friends and fans of Mark Reale and Riot, we are deeply saddened to confirm that Mark has lost his battle with a lifelong illness. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated by Mark’s family, friends, and bandmates at this difficult time.”
Reale rose to fame with the band in the 1970s after forming the group with drummer Peter Bitelli, later recruiting bassist Phil Feit and singer Guy Speranza, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2003.
Guitarist Mike Flyntz recently stood in for Reale when he was unable to attend recording sessions for their latest album
