Maybe the idea is that if the Academy nominates as many movies as possible across the various high-profile categories, more moviegoers will have a rooting interest and more people will watch. “Tree of Life” fans, “Midnight in Paris” fans, “A Separation” fans, “Rango” fans — just about everyone is theoretically covered.
Or almost. It’s curious that the film industry, which spends most of the year catering to the entertainment appetites of the young — with comedies and cheap genre entertainments and superhero movies and popcorn franchises — turns its back completely on those movies and that audience when Oscar time rolls around. Shiny trophies are for grownups! But then there are always complaints that the kids aren’t watching.
A few nominations for “Bridesmaids” are not going to bring them in. And this year there was a big opportunity to award merit while also acknowledging mass popularity and uniting the generations. But the year’s biggest snub doesn’t even register as a snub, since it is somehow inconceivable that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ would have qualified for any nominations in the major non-technical categories.
2012 Oscar Ballot: Cast your votes, create your own Oscars pool and challenge your friends.
Why is that so obvious, though? Surely Steve Kloves’s screenplay is a model of concision and effectiveness, and the director, David Yates, masters both big sensations and intimate emotions. At very least, shouldn’t the Academy’s voters, who love British actors to pieces, acknowledge the superlative work of Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman, who have created two of the great screen characters of the past decade?
Of course, “Harry Potter” does not need the Oscars. But then again, maybe nobody does.
96% on Rotten Tomatoes
100% on Top Critics
87 on Metacritic (only other 2011 movie higher was The Artist)

Like wtf.And not that I think any movie should get nominated for this reason, but wasn't the reason they expanded the noms was because they wanted to include more mainstream movies/box office draws? LOL at this years movies. Like personally I don't think a film should be nominated just because of it being a Box Office Draw but I thought that's why they did it.

He has essentially said he wants to be able to have a Robin Williams-type career where he can transition from drama to comedy with ease. I didn't see "Moneyball," but I don't get why his nomination is more surprising than, say, Williams' in "Good Will Hunting."

I didn't see any stellar acting there. It really is an insult to Shailene Woodley who was AMAZING in The Descendants. I'm not trying to insult Melissa McCarthy and I don't like to blame actors when I feel they get an undeserving nomination... but come on. It was such a stupid role. Maybe someone in here that's said they're happy about the McCarthy nomination can explain to me why she deserves it? I'm just curious.

I agree with the people who have said that comedies deserve more recognition at the Oscars, but why does it seem like the only actors that have been nominated for comedy roles in the last few years have portrayed completely idiotic and unfunny characters? I'm thinking here of Robert Downey Jr. who was nominated for "Tropic Thunder"... like, are you serious? That character was one of the dumbest, most over-the-top racist caricature I've ever seen in a movie, it made me so uncomfortable to watch. Plus the fact I hate Robert Downey Jr. and think his acting is atrocious... I just really never understood that nomination. But now Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids?
