For some reason the event coordinator thought I was a big fan of hers, so she brought me over and introduced me as a Lindsey fan. And I felt bad about it because you could see how overjoyed Lindsey was to actually have a fan. I really do think she was hated as much as Jerri was. She couldn't believe that there was an actual Lindsey Richter fan and that I wanted to meet her. Lindsey and I talked for a few minutes and she was actually pretty cool. She was definitely somebody you would want to hang out with in real life. And I will never forget what she said to me right at the end of our conversation. I always thought this was pretty funny. The finale of Amazing Race 3 had just aired on TV the night before, and it was the episode where Flo spent every waking minute screaming at her boyfriend Zach. Well when I mentioned that I had just watched that episode, and that Flo was annoying, Lindsey's eyes got real big. Then she busted out with "Oh my God did you see that chick? Wasn't she something? Thank God I'm not the most hated person in reality TV history now!" She was very happy that Flo had just taken the torch from her. I have always loved that story.

Africa wasn't getting the attention the other two seasons were getting. 9/11 had just happened, and Friends was hot again as the show uniting the nation in laughter. (that's how the press was spinning it) even at the time, and though I understood the intent of her edit, I never got the Lindsey hate. I thought she was doing what she had to do. It was just her personality. She was loud and self deprecating, and trying to have fun. So as soon as she realized things weren't going her way, she didn't sit back and let the game walk over her. I thought it was awesome how she marched right up to Frank and Silas during their alliance making talk- even calling Silas out, "are you telling this to everybody?" Yeah, her follow up wasn't so hot (although really fun to watch) -"and when I'm pumped up, you DO NOT want to fuck with me!" But c'mon, she was trying to play the game and mostly stuck on defense right off the bat. My friends and I were cheering when she won the tie breaker. it was hot, she was exhausted and was pulled from the game to be rehydrated, so her outburst is understandable after her four votes. But all in all, she had a sense of humor about it -laughing with Carl during their duel, and even laughing with Probst when he reveals her past votes. She wasn't a good player, but she certainly didn't roll over and die.

He was funny and quirky in sort of an odd little way. Most people didn't give a shit about Clarence, although I always liked him.

I wrote a column a few years back called the most troubling reality TV moments, and the minute I posted Flo and Zach as my #1 choice you should have seen all the emails I got about them. I had Amazing Race camera men emailing me, I had other contestants from AR3 emailing me, I had people from AR4. Everyone wanted to email me their favorite Flo story. I can't repeat most of them because people asked me not to, but I can say that the camera crew and the production team -hated- Flo. They had a running joke all year that whoever was lowest on the production team had to be the one who travelled with Flo. So she always got stuck with the rookie camera team or the newest producer. And then they would have bets and stuff and whoever lost had to be the one to hang out with Flo that day. You should have seen all the people who emailed me about her. Even at the start of AR4 the production team was in awe of her. They were still talking about her, even among the AR4 cast.

But because it was a loud yappy annoying 22 year old girl of course she got the Jerri treatment. Although like Cookie pointed out, a lot of that was just Lindsey trying to be funny or Lindsey being an extrovert. She really isn't that bad if you watch her now, she's just loud. But in 2002 when people were watching it live, different story.

I for the life of me can't understand why Richard Hatch is considered a villain.

American culture is all about success, "winning," career, etc etc. Human beings hate extremely arrogant people, and America circa 2000 hated gay people, loved deadpan heroically edited military veterans, and had no concept of playing a zero-sum social game show in a zero-sum fashion that is quite foreign to our nonzero-sum evolved psychology

Understandable; Lindsey did seem to do it for attention or hilarity while Jerri's personality seemed more genuinely like it was displayed. I personally liked both characters despite their villain characters.

One, while America in general may have hated gay people, I'm pretty sure that I've never heard Richard Hatch get flamed for being gay. Two, I don't think Rudy got a "hero" edit. Sure, he got an OTTP edit in some episodes, but I think his characterization was basically as a fish out of water. A person from an entirely different culture and era learning to be around younger, civilian types, and many people just plain thought he was funny.
