So, I just calculated my averages for every year save this one (because of Extremely Loud obviously), and 2009, despite being my favorite year in the group,is NOT the year with the best average. This is because of the film that I'm about to eliminate dragging it WAY down, years with only 5 nominees having an advantage, and one 2009 nominee didn't rank quite as high as I expected but then I realized it was a just placement. That last one happened with a lot of films, actually. I think if I ranked every BP nominee ever the average would be a bit more reflective of 2009's awesomeness, but the ranking isn't finalized yet anyway except for the bottom group. Also, this is the first time I've ever centered a writeup. Hope it comes out well.Anyway, the worst BP nominee of the 21st century is:#74. THE BLIND SIDE2009POSTER/TRAILER ANALYSIS: The poster and trailer are just like the movie. Generic, cheesy, and boring.NOMINATION ANALYSIS: Picture, Actress (Sandra Bullock). Didn't deserve either nomination. Robbed of nothing.I'll edit the numbering when I add ELAIC. (ETA: Done!) Also, no Screenplay nomination. lolpwntUgh, this movie. I don't know why it was nominated for Picture when the movie was so goddamn mediocre outside of Bullock's performance. It's a generic tearjerker and a completely boring one at that. I don't find football or Michael what'shisface to be interesting, but that doesn't mean I hate sports movies. Raging Bull is the best movie of the 80s, Moneyball won't show up for a little while, etc.If you're going to nominate a cute little harmless movie for Picture...fine. But can it at least be GOOD and not stereotype the shit out of everyone? Not everyone in the South is racist, andappropiately enough, not all black people are crack addict rapistsor kind hearted poor people who are good at sports, and there ARE quite a few Democrats in the South. And I spent half the movie wanting to smack the brat who plays Michael's adoptive younger brother because he's so goddamn annoying and untalented to boot.As for Bullock, she's admittedlygood and she carries the movie. I'll give her that. Her best scene (hearing that Michael never had a bed) is some good acting. If the Actress category had 10 nominees, she'd be really deserving. But winning the Oscar? In the same year that the other 3 acting winners all gave performances that fully deserved the Oscars? When she's nominated in the same category as 2 legends and 2 breakout stars? Way to drag the year down. (I do love that she won the Oscar and Raspberry in the same year though.)Anyway, here's a really good example of a scene that demonstrates why the movie shouldn't have won: apparently, Michael saved the bratty kid's life by putting his hand in the way of an airbag. Um, let's look at what's wrong with that:1. Those things inflate at a truly insane speed.2. Earlier, he had been distracted and dancing and not watching the road or the airbag and gotten into an accident.3. If you're in a bad enough accident to activate airbags, you will NOT have the reflexes to block an airbag from crushing some kids face. You will be getting crushed by your own airbag anyway.I also really dislike Blind Side for being the bad apple in the nominees. Basically, I haven't seen every BP nominee ever, but I've seen quite a few and there have been only 3 years where I've agreed with 9/10 nominees (I personally nominate 10 movies EVERY year for my Best Picture Award, so we won't get into the 5-nominee years because it's complicated):1939, 2009, 2010So, 1939 is rightly regarded as the best year in film AND for BP nominees. They nominated the 9 best films of the year and a movie that wasn't so bad (Love Affair). And again, 1939 is regarded asthe bestyear in film. *drools everywhere*2010DID nominate the 8 best films of the year, the 10th best, and a film that didn't belong at all and will be showing up fairly soon (my #9 film was Biutiful)...but this was due to lack of options. 2010 was a shit year for film, so when they nominated a good group, it was a little like "Good job...I guess."2009 nominated the 9 best movies of the year...and The Blind Side. And 2009 was actually a good year, so to have The Fucking Blind Side honored like that was horrid and drove me nuts. I'm pretty sure Invictus was the #11 nominee, and that would've been a satsifactoryalternate (although Where the Wild Things Are would be my choice for #10). Grrrr. And the movie's fans are awful. They think the movie deals with real issues, but...what's the issue? Rich people have it easier than poor people? This was the same year we had nominees about Iraq, the recession, and abuse, and satires of apartheid and WWII.The TL;DR VERSION, WHICH CONTAINS A STOLEN QUOTE THAT SUMS EVERYTHING UP NICELY: "The Blind Side is Precious for rich people who don't want to deal with real violence."That was way longer than I expected. Don't expect repeats of this kinda thing.
