He might think he votes out Amber, then Rob doesn't trust him. Chapera had only voted out no-brainer Rob C, and Susan quit. Lex had no idea how the dynamics were working. He and Kathy had to take a risk. They went with leaning towards the person they had hung out with a lot in real life. As I have said before, I went to several Survivor fan event's in the summer of 2002 and 2003. At them, I would tell you that Boston Rob and Lex seemed to be VERY good friends. Same with Kathy O'Brien, and Big Tom. I BELIEVE that the four of them were setting up alliance. But I can say 100%, that Boston Rob and Lex were the originators of the "Go After the Winners First" edict that largely killed S8. I was in line for autographs, and someone in line was asking the Survivors about if they would do an All Stars show. Most were saying yes, and it was Rob and Lex that loudly said that the winners should be taken out first. Tina could not have been more then 10 feet away and heard every bit of it.

Most of them were still talking unfavorably of what Rob did to Lex and Kathy -and then a few nights before, to Tom... mostly how he spoke about Tom's son and calling Lex a dumbass. and why shouldn't the four make an alliance if they're really good friends in real life. Makes sense. They all make a lot of money. and that's another thing, the final four money was crazy. In fact, the money increments kind of kill the need to play for broke for the grand prize. I know there are television rules and contracts -but it's hard for a 21 year old to feel bad when he or she is pulling in 100,000 for finishing second. Imagine if all the jury was only getting something like 20 grand- we'd see a lot more fighting to get to the final two and go for the win.

It is like watching all those MTV Challenge shows. The veterans ALWAYS have pecking orders set up in parties in Hollywood that they go to. The noobs are always taken out first, even when they have the opportunity to take it to the vets they always 'do the moral' thing and get picked off as a result. In Survivor's case, yes you had people that came in wanting to play the game on the up-and-up and they lost. The ones that set things up before hand won. Should Survivor have been more careful about this? Absolutely. How the show didn't know that the winners would be targeted first, I don't know. Tina is on record that at TC #1, Probst spent an hour on the subject of winners getting a fair chance to play, which tells me that Production genuinely did not think the winners would be targeted the way they were.

If the runner-up prize is 2nd $100,000 3rd $85,000 like it is in most seasons then, because there is so much expected value in playing for the win, is paramount to play to win and not just to get to tribal council (just like you should almost always not take what appear to be enticing deals in deal or no deal). If the runner-up prize is $250,000 (wasn't it this in all-stars?) it gets a little more dicey.

That's how we get abortions like Mike Boogie beating Erika in BBAS (though I've heard that pre-game alliances actually benefited chill town at the expense of janelle-howie-kaysar in BBAS).

I think Rob C is currently probably the most connected ex-survivor with his links to old school and new school survivors.

So someone like Jenna Lewis not taking the risk, it's also in part to knowing she's getting a least an extra 20 - 40 grand for staying another day. But even with the 85, 100 grand rewards, it still takes some of the killer instinct, go for broke instincts out of the players. Someone like 19 year old Natalie is going to feel like she's hit the lottery no matter what just by sitting in the final three. If say they make the merge, and are told they all have 20, 30 grand and the winner gets the million, you'd see a much different game. *and I don't think production cared too much about the winners in all-stars. The whole thing was really just a way to get Rudy, Colleen, Colby, Kathy, Elisabeth or Rupert a chance to win. They know no matter if Rich goes first or manages to last awhile, they can spin it into gold.

Jerri goes back with Rupert, Jenna and Alicia. Rob feels betrayed by Lex and can't trust him. yes, I know it's far from the truth, but that rationale has to go through his mind.

He then goes into the F2 with whomever he wants, has a reputation for being strategic, very strong in individual challenges, and generally has a was quite popular among the alums. That said, the criticisms of Lex voting out all of his challenge horses are valid, and if the whole Amber swap doesn't even happen Rob probably wins the game. I do not think Lex could necessarily bank on Tom flipping, assuming Tom is playing to win. If, the Chaperans minus Tom stick together and Tom flips, he betrays his original tribe and likely loses 4 jury votes if he gets to the end.

True, but that is why I don't give ALL STAR seasons the same weight that I give people playing in their original seasons get. I actually weight it far less, because they have alliances set before game while others don't and because unless the person won the game their first run out, I just don't think it is on the same level. That first time you play Survivor, when you know no one and have nothing to go on but your own ability will always count for more.

Really, though, I don't think Survivor should cast ordinary people; I like when they cast bizarre, unique individuals. Seeing how polar opposites mesh with each other within Survivor is part of the social experiment, and what makes the show fun. I don't want to see regular, boring people cooperate and get along.

Remove this ad I think the issue was not just the targeting of winners in All-Stars, but that all the "lesser" All-Stars like Amber,Alicia,Jenna,Shii Ann, and you could even argue Rob were the last ones standing. To have Amber win ASS still feels anti-climactic. That combined with the overall negative vibe, two quitters, and just a depressing season are what really ruined ASS. HvV on the other hand was immediately better just for the fact that Sandra,Tom,Parvati,and JT weren't targeted for no reason. Though again it was disappointing to watch Tom/Stephenie/Cirie leave the game so early, mainly do to the alliance spearheaded by Amanda/James. This isn't to get into an argument about casting, but was it really necessary to have Amanda and James back for a THIRD time in 6 seasons and put them on the same tribe for a third time? Yes, Steph and Tom had bonded, but not nearly in the same way. To sum up, seasons with returning players have never been has bad as ASS, but there will always be pregame alliances, Ruperts targeting Stephenies because they are more popular, and a level of disappointment. And not to get into an ASS cast wish list, but thats what the producers deserve when they cast Jenna/Amber/Alicia/ShiiAnn/Candice/Danielle
