I know it's not a nominee anymore but I already had plans to watch it with someone so whatever. It is a strange film. I wasn't too impressed with it at first, and by the end I liked it a bit better and after thinking over it for a day I think I really like it. The reason I wasn't so impressed at first is that the script just seemed a little meh, a bit different and dark for different and dark's sake and not much more. But upon reflecting on it, there are two things I really like about the film: (spoilers) -First, that it leaves the nature vs nurture thing ambiguous but certainly leaves it wide open that her behaviour moulded him. She was never very maternal really, and saying how she doesn't like him when he was a baby, and the best part was, even after he's a teen and she's all "woe is me" most of the time, then she gets him to go play miniature golf and spends the time talking about how disgusting fat people are and about how they delude themselves. Trying to spend quality time with your anti-social son yet then not being able to resist saying things like that. But certainly she was no monster to him either, so I loved the balance the film kept in not revealing exactly where the blame for Kevin lies. -Second, and I didn't even get this while watching the film, and heck, I'm not even sure if the film meant it, but the theme of redemption for her in a way. That no matter what happens, you can try to rebuild a life. I mean, look at what happened to her, yet she still soldiers on, getting a crappy job, getting a little house, then trying to fix it up and slowly getting that red paint off it. And really, I love that point, especially because the film doesn't really focus on it at all. But I have to say, I felt so bad for that little girl. Oh, I just wanted to protect her! How she loved her brother and wanted him to like her. I just can't believe those parents would leave the family together after the eye incident. I would've probably done it before, but definitely after that if I were Tilda and suspected Kevin, no way would I ever let him near her again.

On one hand it was a very realistic line and something I've heard so much in my life, but on the other hand it's something I just couldn't imagine HER character saying. Her character, although relatively unpleasant, was relatively open minded and cultured. That ignorance was so unbecoming.

I agree with midnight about the fat comment, seemed completely out of her character's nature to say. I was so happy to see Ezra Miller in the movie as well, I LOVED him in another movie he starred in called Afterschool, and he was pretty good in Kevin (although totally outshined by Tilda, but everyone in the film was). And Sareh Bayat pulling off a shock nomination would have been hilarious <3 She could have possibly been in the top 10 because I think A Separation was far and away the most well known foreign film this year, and it recieved another nomination outside foreign film which I believe is pretty rare (the only recent one I can think of is The White Ribbon), but we could never get so lucky to have such an obscure performance sneak into a major category like that.

I think it's somewhat realistic, as in real life there are people that seem more open-minded and cultured than her character, yet they'll still have some prejudice that pops out here and there. To me, I think that scene is a strength of the script - you know, people in real life aren't always predictable to what you think of them. Films usually don't show those because unless it's well done it seems like a writing flaw. I think that's part of the genius of the whole film - slowly showing how she really has that critical anti-social side inside of her (that was apparently passed down to Kevin in spades) that she tries to keep covered up but pops out sometimes. I sort of took the scene as that she was so happy that Kevin was coming with her that she forgot herself for the golfing trip a bit and let her true colours shine through without thinking - not only the fat people comment but also the funny way she just drops her putter on the course and immediately walks away when they're done. It's like, usually she has to purposely think of being on her good behaviour but there she let herself go.

She figures he's thinking these immature thoughts typical of teenagers and just wanted to say SOMETHING to kind of get him to connect with her. It was kind of like "old mom trying to be hip" in a way.

He could say very simple things and didn't always need a translator to answer audience questions, but she was there and did help him at various points during the Q&A, particularly with questions directed at Hazanavicius, who gave more complicated answers. Just a few weeks later, Anne Thompson said his English had dramatically improved. About Kevin, I want to love it, but I just don't. Spoiler [+] If she's such an unreliable narrator, then why is he so evil and vindictive, saying things like he wanted her to be the only one left with him? If she's a bad mother, why's he terrible at such a young age? And my friend had this amazing theory that he was actually the spawn of the devil, but then why was there a touching mother-son moment at the end? Between my inability to make heads or tails of it and the non-linear storytelling that I found disruptive, it just seems to me like a missed opportunity.

Remove this ad From my understanding of Kevin, Tilda's character had Post Partum Depression when she's pregnant with Kevin and it affected Kevin that's why he's kinda sadistic. I don't know if this happens in real life. I love it though. I love how I felt sympathy for Tilda.

I saw it, it's quite forgettable Sunrise which won "Unique and Artistic Production" is the vastly superior film. The only thing about Wings that I enjoyed about it was the scenes with Clara Bow, including her fantastic TOPLESS scene. As for We Need To Talk About Kevin, the fat people scene in my eyes was the mother trying to mirror Kevin by compromising her morals. She was trying to spend quality time with him and connect with him on his level and Kevin just didn't want it.
