#70. An Education(2009)Get it? A lesson? I can't really take the credit, as I'm pretty sure the title is supposed to imply that same double meaning. I did not originally have this movie in this position, but I feel like this is an appropriate placement for it. Other than Carey Mulligan's performance, I really don't get what was so great about this movie. I mean, it was somewhat interesting to see her get caught up in something like this, a relationship with an older guy, when every adult around her is telling her how stupid she's being, by throwing away her education, and I felt bad for her towards the end, but I wasn't that wrapped up in it. I think every bit of interest I had in her or what would happen to her came from the performance. She carried it. There were some witty comments in the dialogue, and I liked the female teacher a lot, but overall, I don't think there was anything that special about this movie, that warranted a Best Picture nomination. I can understand why it was up for Best Screenplay, because a lot of it was pretty clever, but for me, it just didn't come together to make something great, for some reason. I do think it was smart, and featured a great leading performance, and also solid supporting performances, but I wouldn't have chosen it for a Best Picture nomination just because I wouldn't think to associate the title of "best" with this movie at all. I thought it was just somewhat clever, and very well acted. It's the kind of movie that if it didn't get nominated, was little known, and I had never heard of it until I saw it was airing on TV and decided to watch it, I'd think it was interesting, and two hours well spent. I may even recommend it to some people, but I don't see how this was nominated for Best Picture.Major awards it won or was nominated for:Best Picture (lost)Carey Mulligan for Best Actress (lost)Best Adapted Screenplay (lost)Major awards or nominations I would've given it:Carey Mulligan for Best Actress (nomination)Possible replacement nominee for Best Picture:I'm going to go with (500) Days Of Summer. Like Andr said, there's nothing wrong with nominating a cute, harmless movie, especially one that's equally hilarious and moving.

Nope. (ETA: Numbering fixed.)#72. A BEAUTIFUL MIND2001POSTER/TRAILER ANALYSIS: SUCH an Oscar bait trailer/poster.NOMINATION ANALYSIS: Picture, Actor (Crowe), S. Actress (Connelly), Director, A. Screenplay, Editing, Makeup, Score. Most of them weren't deserved.I don't hate A Beautiful Mind, but it's pretty boring, and the win is really frustrating. You have a great group of nominees plus one movie that isn't that good, and that movie wins. Fuck.I just don't get this movie's appeal to people. Who wants to watch a movie about MATH? Yes, it's somewhat interesting watching all the shit that happensdrive John Nash into insanity, but this isn't Oscar worthy material. I think the only really well-earned nomination was Score, because the Kaleidoscope of Numbers track is really fucking good. It's generically directed, Crowe is simply not at his best here (he's kind of overrated anyway), Connelly has her moments ("I need to believe that something extraordinary is real" being a standout) but she's otherwise brought down by the screenplay and the fact that her role is "generic love interest," and there's nothing all that special about the screenplay or makeup. (The editing was actually pretty good though.) And John Nash does NOT look like Russell Crowe.I wish the Academy had nominated something that wasn't a generic biopic. I mean, when you've got Mulholland Drive, RoyalTenenbaums, and AI Artificial Intelligence(to name a few)eligible in the same year, youshould nominate them over the uninspired work that Ron Howard does here. Hell, outside of Splash, Apollo 13, and Frost/Nixon, I don't like Howard's work. And it's not like those three are masterpieces. I'm pretty sure the Academy was won over by the twist that Nash was cuckoo. All in all, A Beautiful Mind is a bore that should not have won the award or even come near it. Itdoesn't even makemy Top 25 of the year. I was going to post a Supporting Actress montage with A Beautiful Mind's soundtrack providing the music, because that's probably the best thing to come out of that and the music works perfectly, but all the Oscar montages from andbor17 have been taken down or he deleted his account, which sucks. So I'll just post a link to the track instead. Here you go, keep in mind it starts to get boring after 1:30, which is exactly when Mo'Nique chucked the TV off the stairs in said montage and it ended (Melissa Leo hadn't won yet).NEXT UP:

Next up for me is the first one on my list that won a major award. It was for a lead acting performance.
