Clooney has gotten multiple Best Actor noms before getting adapted screenplay, for example. I saw A Dangerous Method today. I loved it. It's one of the smartest movies this year and honestly if they had handled the time gaps better, it might have been my favorite of the year (unfortunately I was left feeling a bit like the film was missing a bit, but it was still great). Michael Fassbender deserved to be nominated for THIS movie, not Shame, in my opinion. And Keira Knightley was just sublime. Such an incredibly mature, nuanced performance that shows her growth as an actress- I actually love the scenes where she's being spanked because her face just perfectly displays the lust and shame that comes from the pain. As usual, people are hating on her because they can never see her as a "serious" actress but the amount of effort she put into the performance, the amount of research she did, the way she evolved from a disturbed and repressed woman to a respected scholar is just perfection. If not for Anna Paquin I'd say she gives the performance of the year.

Posts: 526 (01/28/12 05:35 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	^ Take Shelter opinions, I'll spoiler tag since I reference the ending but I don't really spoil it: Spoiler [+] I don't really know how much I liked it yet, on one hand I loved the atmosphere and the acting, and it was intriguing throughout so I don't know why many are calling it boring. Then, it was also so repetitive with the nightmares which were done pretty poorly. There were times I really felt like it was trivializing its own characters just to fit this "thriller" mood, but the acting was good enough to save it anyway. I really loved the uncertainty of the whole movie, and Michael Shannon is so good and convincing... but that said I wish the ending was more ambiguous but instead it completely squashed all of the mystery to the movie and just felt like "hey, listen to this cool story I came up with" so it cheapened the whole thing for me. It's an acting showcase above all though and the acting is great. It wouldn't have worked with anyone but Shannon, with part of the story clearly trying to reflect all of the economic stresses, and he just feels so... genuine and believable like he blends right in with that social class despite being a movie star. At the same time though all of this outrage at his "snub" (as if he were even close to a nomination) feels warranted yet, like... it wasn't the performance of the year let alone the best leading male performance. I already knew he was capable of this. The real surprise here is Chastain, and it annoys me how Shannon is getting all of the attention (well, Jessica's got critics awards success but everyone knows those were really for ToL/The Help anyway) - she is better than him, lol. God, I loved every second of her performance, she was genuine and appropriate as well, but so heartbreaking too! I think her character was underwritten beyond the basic "sad, suffering wife" thing (not really a flaw though considering it's Shannon's movie), but she just somehow sold it to me really hard and I don't think I've had this much sympathy for a character in a while. GODDESS. I know she isn't Oscar worthy in The Help, but can't we pretend it's a nomination for Tree of Life or Take Shelter instead? I fucking hate this bitch ogress Octavia Spencer, not only is she the weaker of the two in The Help, she's just not ever going to get another decent role ever again, sorry. Her success feels so pointless. I hated how she was basically named the winner from the minute The Help was announced as a project, and I resent how all of these awards have said "yes" without even seeming to give a second thought. EVERY facial twitch that Knightley made was perfectly timed, the twitches told a story in and of themselves. Her performance is basically Jung's notes personified on screen. And then to make that transition from tormented to intellectual is unbelievable. And I thought that Jung's wife was absolutely perfect in the movie? She was so good with her limited screentime (especially the scene in the beginning when she's answering the questions for Jung). I also don't get the Knightley's voice comment. But again... people have always hated on her for the way she talks, for reasons I'll never understand. Fassbender wasn't trying to portray depression at all. In fact what Jung ended up suffering from was not depression at all? It was a large mix of problems that did end up crippling him for the WW1 years but the end of the film was his transition INTO that.

Posts: 1268 (01/28/12 12:48 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Also, I make no secret that I'm a huge Keira fanboy and I know that I am one of about 12 people who will remember A Dangerous Method this time next year, but I DO think that there's something inherently sexist/disgusting about the way that she's received, especially in regards to this performance. It just kills me that a shitty actor like Sean Penn can ham it up in every single performance with no depth whatsoever and be called the greatest working actor or the next Marlon Brando or some stupid shit like that, but the ONE time Keira takes a risk with her performance she's attacked for being over the top and people make fun of her jaw and the way she talks. It's fucking ridiculous and if it were a man this thread would be one of like, 5 places where that person was criticized for the performance. Similarly, if it were Meryl Streep giving the same performance she'd be lauded for how closely she studied the role and how she became the character and her accent was perfect. I don't know whose puppy Keira Knightley killed but she's constantly attacked for being annoying/untalented because she did like, one blockbuster franchise 5+ years ago.

I still don't know what to make of it, but I loved it. I'm not one of those people who notices things outside of acting or the plot, but the cinematography was just incredible and I'd love to see it win. The plot was surprisingly easier to follow than I thought it would be. The ending was pretty crazy, but I think that's supposed to be up to the audience's interpretation. The acting was done extremely well. Brad Pitt was SOOOOOOO much better in this than he was in Moneyball. He still had something off about him, but he was 1000 times better. Jessica Chastain was really good, about on par with The Help I would say, but obviously she wasn't gonna get nominated for this. HUNTER MCCRACKEN! This kid was amazing. Carried the entire movie. Is this his first movie? Because that just makes it even more incredible. His interactions with everyone were so real and I felt like he was Brad and Jessica's son and those kid's brothers (and it wasn't always the other way around). And he had such an awesome performance with so few words. I'm extremely pissed that he didn't get at least a Supporting Actor nom cuz he was LEAGUES better than Jonah Hill (and Brad Pitt in Moneyball for that matter).
