The choice of bitrate (which is the factor driving bandwidth requirements) is driven by Superpass' bandwidth costs not by the ingested video format. If the feeds were delivered to Superpass in an HD format, Superpass would not likely pass on that increased fidelity to the subscribers as it would increase their costs considerably (with the costs growing more than any increase in subscriber numbers resulting from the higher quality). In all likelihood, if the broadcast show went to HD, the only difference you'd see on the feeds would be a change from 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio with quality (and bandwidth usage) remaining largely the same.

I'm happy with the feeds being 16x9 but still in a manageable bandwidth, why do I want to see hours upon hours of "WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK" in HD? I just want the TV show to not look like it's on leased-access cable anymore.

I watch mainly to see how the producers are distorting things with the editing and to see the blacked out competitions.

BBUK does just as well as BBUSA based on the size of the population able to watch. BBUK: 1.6mill or 2.54% of UK population as viewership last season. BBUSA: 7.5mill or 2.47% of US population as viewership last season.

And the live Thurs shows are important, plus the premiere week which we don't see on the feeds, and the finale week. For me, that's enough for it to matter.

Posts: 4020 04/08/12 11:23 AM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Yeah I watch the After Dark shows on DVR, It's possible to show the whole fricking thing on the whole screen instead of black bars, especially last season, when they were doing the Opening for after dark after it was done it flips to letterbox format. I think they've been dabbling with 16:9 ratio a little bit.

HD would be great for After Dark

But you are missing a huge point: The US version usually wins its timeslot as well as the whole night, while the UK one gets buried by the competition usually coming in a distant 3rd or 4th. On another note, I think the main reason of them not switching is not the storage or the cost of buying 50 something new cameras, but rather the fact that processing HD feeds and editing them on the go (they are producing the show in like 2-3 days) would be much harder on the editors, even if they have NASA supercomputers and shit.

True, but the UK version is also on every night of the week. So it faces off against 4 times as many timeslot shows then the USA version and lacks the build up (especially due to the format differences [and the US version being scripted all to hell]).
