That is what I thought too! I love Sci-fi fantasy and I loved the way the writers ran parallel to the original book while bringing home the age old theme of "history will repeat itself." Brilliant? No. A nice piece of SFF? Oh hell yeah! Watch it if you are in the mood for a bit of fun with a classic. Forget about it if you believe "The Wiz" was better than the original film from 1939.
