People die in war. Why is this suddenly such a big deal? This squeamishness about war casualities and collateral damage is why it costs so much and takes so long. Somehow in the last 30 years we have been forced into this "nice" warfare and frankly it makes me wonder if we can ever win another war. In any contest a person who is held to rules their opponent is free to ignore will almost always lose.
It's almost as if we are ignoring the overriding lesson we learned in Vietnam: Never try to engage your enemy in a statistical fair fight in a venue of his choosing.
When overwhelming force is yours to use, you are obligated to use it.
Of course what is going on over there is no longer a war, so that rule may no longer apply.
