They aren't that far from civilization. When voted out they take a boat ride then a car ride to the Ponderosa. James said in his interview it was almost a week before he got to the Ponderosa, but he's on the jury, so he makes the trip from the hospital to the TC every day or so.

Which also brings up how could James/Alexis be in the "production area" to steal food. They are on the island alone, they even take boats to the Challenge beach. So that rumor is bullshit.
