We fire incompetent union employees all the time. The only difference I've noticed with non union employees is that the process is spelled out and must be followed exactly and the slacker gets someone to represent them before any decision is final. The main upside for the employees as I see it they cant make you work overtime without paying you. This happens all the time in non union shops because individual employees generally wont complain because they want to keep their jobs, but the union will complain on your behalf.
