They would've been eliminated anyway. Because for all 8 teams to arrive within 30 minutes, they had to have been pretty close and chances are that had they gone back to the last clue then walked back again they still would've come last. I agree with Oowat in that making them go back was probably to make it look more interesting because they were so far in front.
