8. Sulley (Monsters Inc.)
James Sullivan a.k.a Sulley is pretty much the scariest monster around in the land of Monstropolis. He is awarded top scarer of little children at the Monsters Inc. company nearly every month with only creepy invisible monster Randal as competition (though usually by a pretty wide margine) and as such, he collects the most scream energy for his community and is his boss Mr. Waternoose's favorite. Despite his scary image, however, Sulley is a big softy (and at times too soft for his own good - especially where is less kindly best friend Mike is concerned.) He is an outgoing and kind-hearted monster who is friends with everybody at the company and is well liked by all but Randal Boggs. When Sulley accidently ends up finding Boo, the human girl who has snuck into the monster realm, he is initially afraid of her (humans have germs after all!) but eventually ends up becoming attached to the kid and kind of a father figure to her. Sulley will do anything to protect Boo even at the expense of his (and Mike's) jobs. In the end, Sulley must return Boo to her home in one of the saddest scenes in any Pixar movie. Personally, I'm hoping for an eventually sequel where an older Boo returns to Monstropolis and is reunited with Sulley and Mike.



7. Mike (Monsters Inc.)
Mike and Sulley are a lot like Woody and Buzz in that they are good buddies who were both likable and rank one after the other. Mike, like Buzz, however, gets a bit higher than his friend simply because of his comic value. Mike, who helps Sulley collect scream energy, is pretty much the opposite of his best pal in every way. Where Sulley is a big-hearted fellow, Mike is much more self-centered and can be some what of an ass - but hell, at least he's entertaining about it. He makes fun of Sulley's nemisis Randall behind his back, he tries to get away with shirking office work (though office lady Roz doesn't let him get away with it) and he's an irresponsible boyfriend to Celia. Worst of all, he's pretty nasty about Boo (referring to her as "it" and saying "put that thing back where it came from."), but at the same time, he is also quite a bit more reasonable about the whole situation, knowing that having Boo around puts his and Sulley's jobs in jeapordy. In the end, Mike does come around and warm up to Boo and he also apologizes to Sulley for his jerky behavior. Mike's sense of humor serves him well and in the end, turns out to be great for the company as laughter provides a lot more energy than screams.





6. EVE (WallE)
Someone upthread commented that EVE (or "Eeeevaaa" as WallE pronounces it) is probably the least "main" of the main characters on the list and is more of a love-interest than anything. While this is probably true, she's still a pretty kick-ass character. Pixar doesn't have many female leads, but when they do, they usually tend to be pretty awesome and in many cases, stronger than the male leads. EVE is a sleek, powerful newly invented robot who comes to Earth to take some samples and find out if any life forms still exist. There, she meets WallE and procedes to pretty much kick his ass until she finds out he doesn't mean any harm. During the scenes on the Axiom space ship, EVE proves herself to be much more compitant than WallE, who is of course, a really klutzy robot. She gets very annoyed with WallE and yells at him. She also ends up rescuing him on several occasions. Although EVE pretty much only says two words through out the movie (her name and "WallE"), she has plenty of personality and is a great character.




5. Remy (Ratatouille)
When I first heard about Ratatouille, I thought the concept of a rat scurrying around the kitchen fixing food for people at a fancy French restaraunt to eat was pretty well...gross. While it is a bit hard to stomach at first (pun intended), I eventually did warm up to the idea and even kind of liked it. I love good food too (though maybe not cooking so much...) and I understand his enthusiasism for it. Remy is a passionate young rat with a love for food and cooking. While most of his family is content with eating garbage, the snarky Remy has bigger dreams. Like many Disney protagonists, he doesn't fit in with the rest of his family (especially his father) who just can't understand him. He is facinated by humans, especially the famous chef, Goustou whose motto is "anyone can cook" and his love of cooking leads him to learn a lot about the human world including how to read (which is pretty awesome for a rat). Remy gets his chance to shine as a cook when he meets Linguini and the two become a team. While he likes cooking for people, Remy eventually realizes that his work isn't getting the credit it deserves and he becomes angry. He gets his credit in the end, however, when he is able to impress the critic Anton (who is not easy to impress, btw) and gets a good review.






4. Helen/Elastigirl (The Incredibles)
Like EVE, Elastigirl isn't really the main character per se, but like EVE, she's pretty awesome (and certainly superior to her husband, Bob/ Mr. Incredible). Unlike her husband, Helen adapts easily into regular life after the superheroes are driven into hiding. She takes her job as mom and wife very seriously and wants what is best for her three children. She's pretty much put her super-hero past behind her and only uses her stretchy powers occasionally (which, btw, are much better than generic super strength). After Bob stupidly gets himself captured by Syndrome, Helen, Dash and Violet come to his rescue. She proves to be much more compitanrt than her husband and deserves credit for being the real hero of the story.
