I don't know if Jason and Jay were ever a couple, but they did mention in this ep they've been friends for ten years. I watched the ep but didn't catch why they decided to compete against each other. They playfully trash talked each other from their respective kitchens.

The episode was okay. The premise was hokey (sending them on a cruise together) but whatever. I love cake so it's all good.
